The same scene a few days later

*  Blogger won't let me but the small caption under the photographs anymore.  They made some changes that I don't really like.   The last photo was taken by Vinnie Zuffante

August 22, 1980 --  Once again John and Yoko stop to sign autographs for fans that were waiting outside the Hit Factory after a day of recording.   In both this set of photographs and the previous one you can see John's bodyguard at the Hit Factory.   He was around when John came in or out of the studio.    I know I have his story of this site somewhere.  He carried a lot of guilt with him after John was murdered.

Remember Love 2016

Photo scanned from the collection of Sara Schmidt
Photo taken by Vinnie Zuffante

So we have made it through yet another December 8.   This year has left me feeling very strange.  As you may recall, I turned 40 years old this past October 8th.   My birthday is the day before John Lennon's and so as I woke this morning, I realized that I official have lived longer than John.

I always felt that John died too young, but I guess being the same age that John was when he died, really has put it into perspective just how much life John had to live.   How much life John should have lived.

If nothing else, it has made me want to live the rest of my life to the fullest and not hold regret or angry towards people.   I have had an amazing year in so many ways, but it has always been rough at times.   I need to let go of the things that have brought me down.

I read things that people say such as "John would want us to...."   I have no idea what John would want us to do in 2016.    But it is a strong suspicion that he would still believe in peace.  I think it is our mission as fans of John Lennon to keep his music alive and expose more young people to it and also to treat people of all walks of life with kindness and respect.   Hopefully this will help us someday have some peace in this world.

On a happier note--isn't this photograph precious?

See the Beatles in 1977

Wow 1977 was sure a great time to be a Beatles fan!   One fan met Paul, John and Ringo all within the same year!  Here is his story from the August/September 1977 issue of "The Write Thing."  Written by Mitchell Borofsky.

Seeing John was not that exciting.  We knew he would be at the Minskkoff theatre so we went there and followed them into the press section backstage.  There everyone was shooting pictures of him, Carly Simon and James Taylor.  A girl that I was with went up to him and said, "Hi, I'm nobody, but I'd like to say hello."  John said, "That's okay, we're nobody either."   I went up to him and said, "Hi, I'm Jimmy Carter" and he repeated me!  It's funny because the next night he was at the President's inauguration.

I saw Paul again when he came into the city to see "Annie."  I saw him at the hotel.  I just asked him and Linda if they remembered us.  They said yes.

The next day was a complete shock.  I saw him walking with Ringo into the Plaza Hotel.   They had been walking down 5th Avenue together.  We went up to Paul and Larry asked him to sign Linda's Pictures.  They both did and asked us not to follow them.  Ringo went straight up to his room.  Larry met Ringo the next day and gave him a shirt to which Ringo replied, "Thanks, I'll take anything!"

I saw Ringo a couple of days later going into the hotel with John and Yoko.  I went up to show him the picture my friend took of him and Nancy with Paul and Linda.  He looked over my shoulder and said, "ahhh...that's a trip!"

No Man's Land

All photos taken by Vinnie Zuffante

I love figuring out the dates to Beatles photos by acting like a sleuth and looking at the details.   These solo John and Yoko photos are a great example of that.

I noticed that Yoko was holding a "Playbill" from a Broadway show.   I could make out the words "No Man" and found a copy of the Playbill for a play called "No Man's Land" online that matched the lettering on the Playbill Yoko was holding.

From there I discovered that the play "No Man's Land" was at the Longacre Theatre in New York City from November 9-December 18, 1976 with a premiere opening on November 8.    I could see in the bottom photo a poster behind the driver that says "The Man who would be King," however that did not help me narrow the photos down any more.    So at least now we know that these set of photos were taken when John and Yoko were out for the night to see the play "No Man's Land," which would have been of interest to John because the setting of the play was in North West London.  They were there sometime between November 8th and December 18th of 1976.

John was seen greeting fans outside of the Dakota in his denim jacket with the fur around the neck on  November 26th.     He and Yoko were seen at a restaurant and John was wearing the coat he wore when he signed the papers with Allen Klein on November 28th.   So I think those two dates are out of the mix.

Do any of you see any other clues in these photos that could narrow the date down even more?

Denim John in 1976

Stories about meeting John outside of the Dakota just fill me with happiness.  I hope this one makes you happy as well.

John Lennon

With a Little Help from my friends issue #17 (January 1977)

November 7, 1976 --NYC

Outside of John’s apartment building early that morning, we (Tempy S., Kay P, and I) met up with George Tebbens, Sharon U., and Carol and Nancy.  We all happened to be in NYC to see John and maybe George in court, for the settlement of “My Sweet Lord” vs. “He’s so Fine.”

Too cold outside to stand, we sat in our cars.  George’s car was parked in front of John’s.  We were parked across the street, wondering if he’d come out at all, it being Sunday and the weather looking down.  I kept an eye glued to the front of his house.  People came and went.  Then, there he was! I yelled, “There’s John!”  We ripped open the car doors, and not looking at the on-coming traffic, raced across the street, which explains the look on John’s face --- a bit worried that one of us would get run over.  The Chicago gang was then out of the car – John stood and signed autographs.  He looked as good as ever – dressed in jeans and a denim jacket with fur trim.  His hair was cut a bit like “Walls & Bridges” time and he was so nice.   He asked where we were all from.  I uttered “Cincinnati” under my breath.  As someone else said “Chicago,” he said “Why are you all here?”  No one answered.  Finally Kay said, “too see you.”  Yoko stood there quietly—looking a bit scared.   They posed for pictures.  John said, “Wait here, we’ll be back, you wait here, don’t follow us.”  He and Yoko turned and walked down 72nd Street.  We watched them walk down the street.  A car had pulled out and left a parking spot almost behind George’s car, so we all spread out and stood in the space until Kay got her car.  The nanny brought Sean out for a stroll – cute as ever a getting big.  They weren’t out very long.  She took Sean back in.  We sat in our cars.  A cab pulled up alongside of us.  It was John and Yoko.  As John got out so did everyone else!  He signed autographs again.  As cameras went clicking and questions were asked, he laughed and said, “This is like a press conference!”  He wanted to know why we weren’t in school.  He was in a great mood.  A cop walked by and said, “Was that Paul McCartney?”

He came out later.  Yoko was dressed up.  They hurried and got into a cab.  We waited for them to come back.  A couple hours later they returned.  As he got out, he uttered, “You’re all crazy!”  He laughed a bit and looked up at us and repeated again, “You’re all crazy!”  As they started into the apartment he said something like, “You all go and get some rest.  We won’t be out any more tonight.”  I said “Okay John.  Goodnight.” And patted him on the shoulder.  After that we all went out and celebrated!  About 2 am we called it a night and went back to our hotel, the Holiday Inn.  About 4am this alarm went off.  I thought it was an alarm clock in the next room.  Then I woke Kay and Tempy up thinking maybe it’s a fire alarm.  I went to the door, being stopped by Tempy who wouldn’t let me open the door for anything, thinking it was a trick and someone wanted to ransack the rooms.  So we went out the patio doors.  No sign of fire.  Someone called on the phone finally and said, “get out, the place is on fire!”  A fireman came through the patio door helping us get out.  We grabbed camera first and then whatever else we could.  We went out in our pajamas and stood outside.  About 6am they sent us back to our rooms.  The fire happened to be 3 doors down from us!  We went to bed for about an hour, got up and got to the courthouse by 8a.m.  But we found out they didn’t have the trial until that afternoon.  And that George didn’t have to be there.  So we all went back to John’s.  The afternoon came.  The Chicago gang stayed at John’s while Kay, Tempy and I got a cab and went back to the courthouse only to find that George wasn’t going to show up.  The courtroom was the same one used in the promo film for “This Song.”  We got the subway back to John’s and about an hour later John arrived in a gray limo.  He signed a couple autographs and said he was tired and that he’d been at this all day.  And that was the last time we saw him.
Later we met up with Michael Stankowitz and talked a bit.  His friends and he left, and then we all went down and had pizza.  The Chicago gang then left for home.  We left the next morning.

Ritz, Cream Cheese and Crackers

I have a story for you that comes from the July/August 1976 issue of the MacLen fanzine.  This was was written by Ann Bruno.  Larry Tepper was also there that day.   I spoke with Larry on facebook today and he shared with me some Vinnie Zuffrante photos that were taken that day.   You can see Larry in the photos along with his friend.   Larry says that the girls gave Paul the bathrobe and Linda wasn't too happy about it.  I really had fun finding out the information for this story and talking to people about it.   If any of you readers met Paul and Linda outside of the Stanhope hotel in 1976 and have anything you'd like to add, please do so.

Ritz, Cream Cheese and Crackers
From MacLen Issue 13/14 July-August 1976

How do you write about a day that meant something special to you?  Where  do you find the words that will convey that special feeling?  Believe me it isn’t easy because on May 23, 1976 a very special event happened again in my life.

It took place in front of the Stanhope Hotel in New York City.  At around 8:30, Margie P. Barb C., Stephanie G., Kay P. Kathy S., Kris S. Marla R., Sue F., Tempy S., Patti G., Nancy G, George Tebbens and myself found ourselves sitting myself found ourselves sitting around tables.  The Stanhope hotel has a French-style restaurant attached to the main building, equipped with a huge colorful canopy overhead.  We all sat there awaiting the arrival of Paul.  We found out early that he left by cab so all of us were watching all the cabs pulling up to the hotel.  After a while we decided to be a little elegant and ordered drinks and all of us were satisfied with ordering only one.  So we sat there and waited.  If anyone ever went thru this “waiting period” for a Beatle to arrive, then you can understand the anxiety that goes through you.  It is downright nerve wracking.

At around 9:00, Margie, Kathy and George decided to try their luck at seeing John, so they left to go to the Dakota Building.  The rest of us remained and again waited, constantly keeping eyes glued for all the cabs.  Well, after a few minutes, a few of us decided to get something to eat , so off they went  to a small supermarket to buy some much needed food.  We were all starving and when they came back we proceeded to eat cream cheese, crackers, and various cheeses like it was our last meal.  We were all sitting there having a small picnic, chatting, when suddenly out of the corner of my eye I see a flash bulb go off.  I turned to see and there he was bouncing ever so beautifully.  It was Paul.  Oh god I couldn’t believe it.  He stopped and turned to all of us and said so sweetly, “Hello Girls!”  We were so surprised.  He was supposed to come back by cab and there he was standing there so beautifully.  The street light shone so brightly down on him and you could see him so perfectly.   We were shocked.  In fact, so shocked that Stephanie just stood there with cream cheese near her mouth.  He was wearing a beautiful brown leather jacket and new blue dungarees.   He was gorgeous.  He walked more and stopped directly in front of us.  I stood there just looking at him.  I wanted to plant everything about him in my mind.  I found myself speechless and I curse myself now for not saying anything to him.  But at the time I couldn’t talk.  The girls had a gift for him and Stephanie gave it to him.  He asked them if they wanted him to open it then and with a “yes” he proceeded to do so.  He even shocked them some more when he guessed what was in the box.   It was a beautiful maroon robe.  As he opened it, I kept my eyes glued on him.  I couldn’t get over how gorgeous his hair was and how beautiful his face was.  He said, “Thank-you” and “good-bye” and turned to walk into the hotel.   I knew he had to go but I didn’t want that moment to end.  As he disappeared into the hotel,  I sat down and cried.  He was so beautiful and I couldn’t believe what had just happened.  I wanted him to come out again but I knew that was impossible.  I thanked God for I knew I would see him again in concert the next night but I knew it wouldn’t be the same.  So I left the hotel a little wak, but very happy.  Paul thank-you very much for that special night.

So long Pete Bennett

I just read on one of the Beatles news sights that Pete Bennett passed away.  That made me want to share these photos that Lizzie sent a while back.  They were taken by Vinnie Zuffante.

Jeans

Here is a slightly different frame than what I have previously seen.  It is almost the same, but John has a different look on his face.
