Paul's Haircut Shocks the Barber

This is a newspaper article from 1981 about a barber that unexpectedly cut Paul and James' hair.

Paul's Haircut Shocks the Barber
By Geoff Garvey

Old-style barber, Jack Turner nearly dropped his clippers when a customer demanded a short back and sides.

For sitting in the chair was the owner of one of the world's most famous heads of hair - Paul McCartney.

Jack, 59, said at his shop at St. Lenord's-on-sea, not far from McCartney's Sussex home. "I told him that I was not going to give the king of The Beatles a short back and sides.  Even when his wife Linda asked I still refuse.  In the end, we settled for a trim."

Afterwards, Linda sat in the chair with 4-year old son Jamie {sic} on her lap so that he could have his hair cut as well.

Jack said, "I asked Paul why he hadn't gone to a top salon.

He said, "I don't want that.  I want a traditional hairdresser.  I don't want fuss or bother."

McCartney had waited his turn behind five other customers in the traditional salon.

Jack said, "He was absolutely charming and people were chatting to him. He was very down to earth."

McCartney, who is reported to earn £25 million a year, paid Jack £2.00 and a tip.  "We don't talk about that, do we,"  said Jack.

A member of Paul's staff said of his visit to Jack's Barber Shop "I'm not surprised.  He likes to be treated as an ordinary person."

Hello Caller?

One of the things I remember the most from the old Donahue talk show was that random people would call and ask the guests questions.   Donahue would pull out a telephone and always refer to the person as "caller."   As a kid at the time,  I thought it was funny.   So to find this photo of Ringo on the telephone on the Donahue Show is pure gold to me.

The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson

 May 6, 2021

Paul and John were on the Tonight Show in 1968, but did not get to be interviewed by the man himself, Johnny Carson.    Ringo and Barb, the newlyweds, had much better luck in 1981.

Oliva and George Harrison

I had this listed as a photo from Ringo's wedding, but I am not so sure.   I think it is because the clothing seems to be the same, but I can't see the stripes on Olivia's outfit.

Another day in London

April 28, 1981 -  It is the day after Ringo and Barb's wedding and while the newlyweds are enjoying their new married life, Paul and Linda are back to work in London (and meeting a lucky fan)

Happy anniversary Ringo and Barb - 40 years! ♥♥♥♥

April 27, 1981 -

40 years ago today Ringo Starr married Barbara Bach.   This couple has been through a LOT together.  Somehow they managed to stick by each other and have had a strong marriage now for 40 years.  Congratulations to them!    I love them as a couple.  I wish them all the best!  Happy birthday to one of our favorite couples:  Ringo and Barb!

The reception

Apri 27, 1981 - - After Ringo and Barbara exchanged vows, they went to a nightclub in the Mayfair part of London called "Rags" for a reception.   Between 50-70 people were invited.   Besides George, Paul and their wives (and in Paul's case children - I guess the Harrison got a babysitter for Dhani), also at the wedding were Ringo's parents, Barb's parents, Barb'd children from her first husband,  Derek Taylor (and wife, Joan), Neil Aspinall (and his wife, Joan), Harry and Oona Nilsson, Hillary Gerrard, and makeup lady named Barbara Daley and a hair guy named Leonard.  Terry O'Neil took photographs.

Everyone left with a large solid star and of course, the wedding cake was also shaped like a star.

The biggest and most exciting news from the reception was that the "Threetles" (which they wouldn't be known as until the mid-1990s) were heard making music and some people even say that they heard "Beatles songs" (although which ones is unknown to me).   But from the photographs, we see that Paul played piano and George was on the guitar and Ringo seems to be playing some sort of make-shift drum and also a guitar.   Oh to have been a fly on the wall of the Rag nightclub on April 27, 1981!

The wedding only lasted a few minutes

April 27, 1981 -

Ringo and Barbara were wed at the same place that Linda and Paul got married,  and by the same registrar which I have always thought was an odd bit of Beatles trivia.

There are just a few photos that we know of from the actual wedding itself.  The news said it only lasted a "few minutes."   We see that Barb's sister, Marjorie was the maid of honor, but who was Ringo's best man?  I see Hilary Gerrard standing nearby but who is the man standing next to Ringo?  And why is it not Harry Nilsson?   Harry really should have been Ringo's best man if you ask me (which obviously Ringo did not).

Note:  According to the Club Sandwich magazine Mr. Roger Shine was one of Ringo's witnesses.  Could that be the best man?

 April 27, 1981

I was thinking about Ringo and Barb's wedding day was the first time Paul, George and Ringo were together after John's murder.   It must have been a bittersweet time -- happy for Ringo and Barb but grieving that John wasn't there with them.   But then I could not recall the last time that Paul, George and Ringo were together before Ringo's 1981 wedding.   Would it have been Pattie and Eric's wedding reception?

Rockshow '81

I absolutely love watching the movie of the Wings Over America tour, Rockshow.   I never quite understand how the tour was from 1976 and the movie did not get shown until 1981 after Wings had ended.   Nonetheless, it was on April 8, 1981, that it had the world release.
