10 years without George

First I want to say that I purposely waited until late in the day on November 29 to post my tribute in memory of George. I did that because while I know that George passed away on November 29, 2001, it wasn't until the morning of November 30, 2001 that I heard the news. As I have said in the past, the day I learned of George's death was my last day working at a job that I was anxious to leave. I had quit on September 12, 2001 after realizing that life was too short to be stuck doing something you dislike. But this particular job had a 2 MONTH notice (instead of the traditional 2 week notice) and with my accumulated sick days and whatnot, November 30 was my last day. On December 1 I was going to venture out into a new phase of my life. Somehow George's death at that particular moment of my life made me think about how George also was going onto his next phase of the cycle of life.

Having a Beatles blog, I felt like I had to do something great in honor of George. "People expect it, Sara", I was telling myself all day. And I had a few different ideas. I looked for letters from fans written after his death and found very little. The photos I personally took of the George Harrison memorial wall at Beatlefest in 2002 didn't look as great as I remembered them.

Words cannot express how I feel about George. George isn't my favorite Beatle. I have jokingly referred to him as "my fourth favorite Beatle." Because I love and adore George Harrison, and he is one of my favorite musicians ever. I think George would have found that to be a funny statement. It actually angered me that after George's death people that I know were never fans started calling him their favorite Beatle. But now, 10 years later, I don't care.

Anyhow....I am leaving you with some excerpts from a Rolling Stone magazine article written in by Fred Goodman along with two fan photos, one of which was taken by Lizzie Bravo and the other I think was taken by Cathy Sarver (although I might be incorrect about that one.)

Das and Goswami, the Krishnas who prayed and kept him company till the moment of his death, say Harrison's humor was intact until he died. 'There was some great jokes,' says Das. 'He's always been a super comedian.' 'He faced the end with great humor and courage,' said Dr. Lederman, who treated Harrison. 'He believed that death is part of life and had no fear of death. sometimes it made those around him uncomfortable. But he was totally fearless about it.

In early November Harrison received treatment on Staten Island. Throughout, he remained in good spirits, even working on "Brainwashed". And it was there on November 12th that he shared a final reunion with his former band mates, Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney. According to the British tabloid, Sunday People, Harrison was in high humor throughout lunch, recalling early adventures from their days together, including how he had thought he fellow Beatles were asleep when he lost his virginity in their shared Hamburg hotel room, only to have them cheer and clap when he had finished. Starr, who had flown in from Boston, where his thirty-one year old daughter is being treated for a brain tumor, left after lunch when Harrison went for treatment (and we all know what was shared between Ringo and George at that moment, especially after seeing the Harrison documentary this past October) but McCartney insisted on remaining, spending the rest of the afternoon with the Harrisons. "It was a spirited affair," said Lederman, "not a somber one. There were lots of laughs and lots of fun. There were tears, but George remained very much a man of dignity. At the end, after both Paul and Ringo had left, he was fine and calm. He was a very happy man. This meeting meant so much to him."

Toronto Press Conference '65

Here are some snapshots taken during the Beatles press conference in Toronto in 1965. I thought the "rules" of this press conference were interesting. I wonder how closely they were followed. I bet there were some girls under the age of 18 there as "datebook" press. And I also would bet that someone asked for an autograph. Notice that Brian and Tony Barrow are in the back.

Yoko's nose

Great photo of John and a little bit of Yoko.

Inside the walls of Cavendish

It most likely isn't shocking news that those of us who run a Beatles photo blog frequently visit the other Beatles photo blogs and take photos from them often. My two favorite Beatles photo blogs are Tammy's Beatles photo blog and Sean's Kenwood blog. These are by far the two BEST ones online. If you don't frequent them, I beg you to stop hanging out here and go over there. Anyhow...these two shots of Paul and John from 1967 were taken from the Kenwood blog. They aren't the best photos in the word (actually they are blurry), but I love them because they show the INSIDE of Paul's Cavendish Avenue in London home! You almost never see inside of Paul's house! Not sure who took these photos, but I am amazed!!!

John and girls

I think these two ladies are record company people.

Paul

Waiting on Ringo

This fan is acting way to calm and patient to get Ringo's autograph!

Beatlefans

Full blown Beatlemania going on here.

Paul meets Eric in Paris

Beatles author (I am in the process of getting his book, Beatles fact and fiction 60-62 from him. I will give a short book review once I get it), Eric Le Bourget Airport near Paris, France on May 31, 1989 while Paul was promoting his "Flowers in the Dirt" album. Hamish Stuart and Linda were also there with him. A special thanks to Eric for sharing his photo of him with Paul and allowing me to post it on the blog. What an amazing moment that must have been!

George 1970

"George Harrison lounging on the deck of a friend's yacht, after recording of "All Things Must Pass" September, 1970. photo by Burt McClennan

The stage is set

If this is a classic photograph, then I don't know what is. A fan (with color film no less) got up close to the stage prior to the Beatles arriving on the stage and snapped this photo of Ringo's Ludwig drum kit and the Vox amps. Now...who can tell me what concert this was?

Held held high

Paul and Linda on their wedding day. Check out the fans giving Linda the "evil eye." I think that is Apple Scruff, Margo with Bam Bam (child that she often babysat). I do know that she was there with him that day, and Paul asked if he was okay in the crowd. Linda seems to be trying not to make eye contact with the fans. I understand why the fans were so suspicious of Linda at first, but I think they made things difficult for her at times.

Paul, a fan and a creepy doll

I know that fans gave the boys gifts all of the time, but I sure hope this super-creepy doll wasn't a gift from this fan to Paul. What would Paul do with that thing??

Close Encounters of the Beatle Kind!!

The following story of a fan meeting Paul McCartney in 1981 was first published in the March/April issue of "The Write Thing." It was written by Gloria Rossi.

I
met Paul McCartney 4 times, twice on Sept. 21, 1981 and twice on Sept. 28, 1981. I was on vacation in London with my friend Terry. We had been talking about going to England for a couple of years to "see the sights" but kept putting it off for one reason or another. But this year was it, England or bust. A mutual friend, Laurie, was also there and contacted us at our hotel in London. We toured all the usual Beatle sights: Abbey Road, Apple, Paul's house on Cavendish Ave; etc. I was pretty happy with that. Terry had heard form Pat Simmons from "With a Little Help" who heard from someone else that Paul was mixing at album at Air Studios. Laurie had the phone number so she called to see if John Hammel, Paul's roadie would be in, this being the 21st. Whoever answered the phone said that he was expected that afternoon. So where Paul's roadie would be, Paul would follow.

We headed down there to try our luck. And luck was with us that day. We set up a vigil on the corner about 12:30 and waited less and half an hour, when all of a sudden this car drives up. Thought to myself, "that man in the back seat looks like Paul, but don't get crazy thinking every time a car drives by, Paul might come out. All of a sudden Laurie said, "there he is," and I was in such a state of shock that I didn't see him at first, saying only "Oh, my God!" Paul, James Louis and Linda got out of the car. He stopped for just a second saying he was in a hurry, but I managed to say "hi" and touch that gorgeous hunk! I didn't believe it, me who has literally never met anyone, let along one of the Beatles. I barely managed to contain myself and started going crazy just before they disappeared in the building. Paul turned around and gave sort of a funny look, but I guess he doesn't realize what a thrill it is to meet a Beatle! I thought I was "satisfied" with seeing him this one time, but after seeing him once, I wanted more, once is not enough!

So after attempting to see some of the other "sights" in London, we decided to go back and wait for Paul to come out. We got back to our corner about 4:45 and about 5:30 his car drove up and out came Linda and James. It happened so fast I didn't see them, but I knew if they were going back that meant Paul was still in there. So we waited and had my eye on the door and all of a sudden about 6:45, out he came holding James' hand, with Linda following. I immediately started taking pictures - didn't want to blow it this time. He stopped for just barely a second again - we then asked about pictures. Paul said only a quick one, but we couldn't get him to stop and pose. After seeing him earlier this afternoon, we decided to get something for James's birthday, even though we were a little late. I remember Paul saying somewhere that if he could be any animal he would like to be a Koala bear. So we got one for James along with a card that said, "now that you're 4." Terry gave Paul the bear for James, but she still had the card in her hand, so I said to her, "give him the card, give him the card." I started taking pictures again as they went across the street and got into the car. In the car Paul waved at us, we waved back and James held up the bear and off they went.

On Monday the 28th, we got a call from Laurie, saying she was going to Air Studios to wait for Paul, and did we want ot come. After thinking about it for 1/2 second we said yes and got to our familar corner about noon. This time we had to wait, wait and wait some more. By 2:30 my feet were killing me. At 2:40 his car drove up and otu comes Paul, and he was alone this time, just with his roadie, who drove. Again he said he was in a hurry, but this time he stopped for a minute, but long enought ot get him to sign John's book "In his own write," which I had been faithfully carrying around, "just in case." As he was signing a Rupert the Bear book Terry had, she asked Paul if she could have a picture and he said, "I think you are" as yours truly was in position with her Pentax! Terry was then getting ready to take a picture of Paul and Laurie and I figured I'd better get in there or lose out, so I got on Paul's right, put my arm around his waist and Terry clicked. I couldn't believe it, meeting Paul 3 times.

Paul went into the building, and this time it took quite a while for me to recover (I still haven't recovered!). We decided to do some shopping, but who could after meeting Paul?? So we went back to try to see him leave. Terry and I were leaving for Paris the next day, so this would be our last chance to see him. We waited from 5:30 til 7:50. Paul's roadie came running out, and got the car, so we knew that Paul would be out shortly. Sure enough, a few minutes later Paul comes running out, saying "sorry I'm in a terrible hurry girls, I'm sorry I can't stop now." As he ran across the street, I called to him "thanks for being so nice this afternoon!" I hope he heard me. He got in the car adn disappeared into the night. Goodbye Paul, and thanks!

Carry that Weight a long time

Geroge in profile

Linda's Last tour

Fans in Melbourne, Australia in 1993. I so wish that I didn't miss out on going to see Paul in 1993! One of the few regrets I have in my life.

Former Friends

I have met one of the people in this photo and sadly it isn't Ringo. I met Mark Hudson and he autographed my Ringo "Storytellers" Cd cover for me. Ringo and Mark had a falling out
in 2006 after Mark backed out of the 2006 All-Starr Band tour at the last minute to do a reality talent TV show instead. Mark claims that has nothing to do with why he is no longer working with Ringo. *shrug* All I know is that now Mark Hudson is a mainstay at the Fest for Beatle fans. I think he has been a guest for the past 10 years in a row! (at least close to it). I used to hear him speak at the Fest, but anymore I skip his talks. He can't have any more stories to share.

In 2003, however, Ringo and Mark were BFF's and they seemed to go everywhere together! Here they are in New York (I believe) at a record store autograph session.

Fans rush the stage for Wings

Fans rushing the stage didn't end with the Beatles tours. Nope. Here are some fans at Wings show in Fort Worth Texas in 1976 being ushered off the stage during a concert. Not the best way to meet Paul.

End of the fan club

All good things must come to an end, and sadly in 1972, the Beatles fan club ceased existence. The story that was known for some times was that the official Beatles fan club ended because George Harrison was upset with the George Harrison Fan Club in the United States (run by Pat Kinzer, whom we have seen many of her wonderful George photos on this blog). There are two stories about this fan club and how it lead to the end of all Beatles fan clubs in the world.

Theory 1
There was a rumor that Pat and her officers were giving tours (and charging fans money) of George's mother, Louise Harrison's, grave. Since his mother's death from brain cancer in July 1970, George had been very private about the location of her grave. Supposedly when he heard that fans were touring the site, he was very angry and put an end to all fan clubs. I am not even sure if that story is true at all. But I do know that Pat and the George fan club started the Louise F. Harrison Memorial Cancer Fund and raised money through the club members in Louise's name for the hospital where she was treated. I also believe that Pat herself was given the location of the grave from George's father, Harold, because having met Louise many times, she wanted to privately pay her respects. At no time were tours ever given (at least not by the George club from the States) of George's mother grave.

Theory 2
This is the theory that Pat herself believed for a very long time and lived with the guilty of what she thought was the person who single-handedly ended the Beatles fan club after 11 years of existence.
In the December 1971 issue of the fab club's newsletter, Pat had reproduced an interview with Pattie where she states something along the lines of how she and George wanted to adopt a child. Pat mails the newsletter to Friar Park, where George's sister, Louise is living. Louise had always received issues of the newsletter. George sees this newsletter and the information about adopting a child upsets him so much that he calls the whole newsletter, "crap" and goes to Allen Klein and complains. From there George gets Ringo on board and they demand that all Beatles fan clubs everywhere close down for good.
As you can read in the newsletter Pat puts out when she learns about this, that she is angry, sad and confused about all of this. Honestly, it really is a shame that George didn't contact Pat himself to get the entire story. Why wasn't he mad at the magazine that published the original interview with Pattie? Or even with Pattie herself for giving out such private information is beyond me.

The Truth:
The truth as far as I understand it, and hopefully Freda Kelly's new documentary will explain more about this is as follows. The Beatles had been broken up for a year and a half when George sees Pat's club's newsletter. George had been trying to put out his own songs and get away from the whole Beatles thing. And while the fan club was going under the name "Apple Tree" by 1971, it still was very Beatles-centered. Paul had sued the other three Beatles and I think for George "Beatles" were not something he really wanted to be associated with. George was under the impression that there was no longer a Beatles fan club. And then he sees this fan club newsletter, that has out this information about him and Pattie wanting to adopt and he is pushed over the edge. He thought there were no fan clubs anymore! So he marches int0 Apple and demands that the clubs end. Really, the clubs were in the process of ending anyhow. So maybe Pat's newsletter or the rumor about the tours just pushed things along a little quicker, but they were going to end in 1972 regardless. So Pat is not to blame at all. She did nothing wrong. She supported George and his charities, and really all she did was report the news as she found it. It is just so sad that George couldn't have discussed this with her. It isn't like he had no idea who she was.

Anyhow....to read more about Pat and her club and all of this stuff with the club ending, you have to read her book, Do You Wanna Know a Secret.

I think posting these things is very sad, but still important to the story of the Beatles and their fans. Remember to make photos larger to click on them, then right click on "view image."

Early John shades

Where are these from?

I must pause our regularly scheduled Beatles fan photos and stories to post these gorgeous John Lennon photos and ask. Where are these taken? It looks like 1965 to me. So there are two choices. Either on the set of Help or when John and Cyn along with George Martin and his wife went on a ski holiday.

Okay Dutch friends, what does this say? Interesting item, that is for sure!

John writes back

I located this nice story of a fan by the name of Phyllis Mancz from Ohio who received an autograph back from John Lennon in the late 1970's. I found this story in the Nov/Dec 1981 issue of "the Write Thing." I hope that Phyllis still has her wonderful autographs! I also included a photo from March 29, 1977.

About 1978 or so, I wrote to John at his NYC address to obtain his autograph (I already have all their autographs, thanks to an English pen pal from the middle 1960's, but wanted to get John's on my own, on a special photo). I sent him a 5x7 b/w photo in short pants, holding a cuddly puppy. The note card I used had a Japanese watercolor of cats (John loved cats) on front. In the note I told him how the Beatles had changed my life, etc etc. and asked him to sign the enclosed photo for me. I also suggested I would love a photo/autograph of Yoko, if she was willing. I sent along a SASE, of course.

It didn't take long to receive back the 8x10 envelope from NY. I had other autograph requests at the time, but I felt my heart quicken when my eyes beheld the NYC postmark.

From the envelope, I pulled out the original photo of John beautifully signed in a large hand in green ink! Then I pulled out an 8x10 b/w photo of John with Yoko, which he so kindly added. This was signed by both of them in blue pen. I was very pleased and proud with my booty, but something tickled at my subconsciousness, "This isn't weird enough for John Lennon!" a little voice said. "It's much too tame." So I opened the envelope again and peeked inside. There WAS something else! It was my note card (I had ended by note by thanking him for everything he meant to me) and on the back he had signed in green ink: "Your welcome, John Lennon" (his spelling): I thought delightedly, "Now, that's the John I know!"

I still have all 4 autographs and wouldn't part with them for anything (even for cat food money -- let them become vegetarian like me). John's signatures mean more than ever now that I know I can never get another one from him. He was beautiful. He was love. He is forever.

What a joy ride!

So I think that girl is happy to have been almost trampled by the Beatles.

On the edge

I'm yours until Niagara Falls

Removed at copyright owners request. Sorry! :(

I didn't even realize that John and Yoko made a visit to Niagara Falls until photos of John and Yoko there started making the rounds online. Here are a couple more taken there in 1969.

The vest with a suit jacket and tie

I just had to share this photo because I don't recall Paul ever using his popular vest in a suit before!
