The stage is set

If this is a classic photograph, then I don't know what is. A fan (with color film no less) got up close to the stage prior to the Beatles arriving on the stage and snapped this photo of Ringo's Ludwig drum kit and the Vox amps. Now...who can tell me what concert this was?

  1. Most people used color film in the 60's. It wasn't necessarily unusual. Esp for snap shots like this one. I don't know many people who still used B&W. The reason there are so many B&W pics of the Beatles is probably bc the photogs wanted to use it for effect.

  2. By the style of lettering on Ringo's drum and the look of the amplifiers this photo is probably from the 1966 touring period

  3. That drum skin is from the 1964 summer tour.

  4. cyeaiky, b&w wasn't used "for effect" back then. Color film for the home market (for Kodak Instamatics and the like) was inexpensive, but professional photographers used b&w because it was too expensive for publications to use color to the extent it's used today. Newspapers never used color in the mid-'60s, and the majority of photos in magazines were still b&w.

  5. Great shot! I haven't seen (or noticed) a shot like this showing the Vox cab missing the "V."

  6. I don't know a whole lot because I wasn't around in the 1960's. I do know that most of my family photos from the early 1960's are in black and white. My family seemed to have changed to color full time around 1967. I was always told that at that time black and white film was cheaper and color was only used for special occasions. I figured the photographer of this photo must have thought of the Beatles concert as a special occasion. I thought the drum looked like it was from 1964. I will figure out the concert.

  7. Went through my '64 concert shots and this photo was from Aug 27, 1964 in Cincinnati Ohio. The background banner reads: WSAI Good Guys present the Beatles"
