Paul goes to college
To the shock of the co-eds moving into Yale today, they were shocked to see Sir Paul McCartney on campus. Why was Paul at the famed University? Was he planning on taking classes this semester? Is he there to teach a class? No no---he is there with his oldest grandson, Aurther, to get him enrolled and moved into his new college! While he was there, he shook hands and chatted with other college kids that were moving in.
So if you live in Connecticut -- be on the look-out for Paul over the next four years because you never know when he might be around, visiting his grandson!
And a side note: How can Aurther already be in college? I remember when he was born! I even remember going to Beatlefest the year he was born and Barry Miles was there telling us how he had lunch with Paul and Paul was showing off baby pictures of his newly born grandson. My how time flies!

Meow! My Groovy Life with Tiger Beat's Teen Idols: A Book Review
Tonight on the Wednesday Review, I am going to review a book that ended up not being about the Beatles at all. When I purchased the book Meow: My Groovy Life with Tiger Beatle's Teen Idols by Ann Moses and Ann Wicker, I knew it wasn't going to have complete Beatles coverage, but I thought there would be some. So right off the bat, I want to let readers know that besides just a passing few words here or there, the Beatles aren't in this book.
Does that mean I don't recommend Meow! to all of you? Not one bit, and let me explain why. Ann Moses was a typical teenage girl in 1966. She loved all of the British invasion groups and she had asperations to be a writer, even though she was working at the orange juice counter at Disneyland. She saw the Dave Clark Five in concert and managed to interview them for her college newspaper, which lead to writing for a small fan magazine which then got the attention of the up-and-coming Teen Mag, Tiger Beat. It wasn't long before Ann was working for Tiger Beat and fulfilling the dreams of every American teenage girl.
I am sure you all remember Tiger Beat. It was the hipper version of 16 Magazine. It was aimed towards pre-teens and early teenage girls and would have glossy color pin-ups of your favorite gorgeous stars of the day. They also had some wild stories of fans meeting these hotties, as well as advice columns and contests. Tiger Beat always painted a rosy picture of the stars, but seemed still have more edge to it than 16.

Dick Clark interviews Ann -- I love the Beatles artwork in the background! |
Ann tells her story in this autobiography of interviewing all of the big named stars of the late 1960s and into the 1970s: Paul Revere and the Raiders, the Monkees, Desi Arniz Jr., Herman's Hermits, Bobby Sherman, and David Cassidy were all famous people that Ann spent a lot of time getting to know and wrote about for the magazine. Ann is very honest and tells us who among the famous were super sweet and who among them were rude. She doesn't report this in a mean or gossipy way; she just states the facts. And through it all, you get an interesting idea of what it was like to write for a Teen magazine in the 1960s.
Ann falls in love with one of the big-name stars (you will have to read the book to discover who it is), and she suffers quite a heartbreak. I couldn't help but feel so badly for her during this part of the book. What I liked about Ann was that she could have turned herself into a groupie and slept with some of these rock stars on tours, but she did not take that route (with the rare exception of the one star that she fell in love with) and still was able to establish relationships with them in order for them to open up enough for her to write the stories that the teenagers of America wanted to hear.
I really enjoyed this book even though it wasn't at all what I expected. I found myself laughing and swallowing tears all during the book. I also liked the fact that the print on the page was large and easy to read. So many books I have been reading lately have tiny print, so this one didn't strain my eyes.
If you read Tiger Beat or any Teen magazine back when you were a teenager, then I really think you will enjoy this book. It was one of the better books I read this summer.

Val the Cavern Coat Girl
It was 58 years ago today -- on August 29, 1959 that the band known as the Quarrymen first played the Casbah. You are all familiar with the photo --- John and Paul are rocking it out. John's head is down and Paul is looking loving into the eyes of Cynthia Powell. Next to Cyn is a girl and on the end is a fellow.
The girl next to Cyn is named Val. No one seems to remember the name of the boy on the end. But Val had quite a time in Liverpool in the late 1950's and into the early 1960's. She worked as a coat girl in the Cavern during those days and so she had the opportunity to see the Cavern turn from a strictly jazz club into a beat club.
She explained in an interview in 2014 with the Montreal Gazette: “All the Cavern girls who were working would take turns coming out to watch and listen from the middle cloakroom,"
Val liked the guys in the Quarrymen/Beatles, Gerry and the Pacemakers (she briefly dated Gerry) and her favorite band was the Blue Genes. She started to date John from the Blue Genes after he dedicated the song "Oh you Beautiful Doll" to her at the Cavern one night.
She continuted to work at the Cavern, watch the bands and date John until he told her the news that his day job was taking him to Canada and he was going to leave Liverpool. After some consideration, Val decided to follow him. There was a little "goodbye" to Val at the Cavern and Paul McCartney dedicated and sang "Til There was You" for Val as a final goodbye.
The couple was married shortly after this and have been married ever since! Just a little aside--do you know who was hired to take Val's place in the coat room? A girl named Cilla White got the job, but she soon was to be known as Cilla Black.

Another one with that car
This photo must have been taken the same day as the one of just Cynthia that I posted yesterday, but here you see more of the car. Since many of you commented on the car, I thought I'd show off this picture so you could see the whole thing---and John!

Proud new Dad
This photo was taken either the day that Dhani was born or of the day after. Must have been one of the happiest times in George's life!

Brian and the boys
Originally I was going to post some photos of Brian with the Beatles as a group, but instead I decided to post a photo of him with each of the individual members of the Beatles. Each guy had his own unique relationship with Brian. They saw him as so much more than just their manager. He was the best man at John, Ringo and George's weddings. He was Julian's godfather. He was someone John, Paul, George and Ringo trusted and admired. Brian was far from perfect. He made some terrible choices in his personal life and I am sure it was very difficult to be a homosexual in the UK during a time when it was illegal. Looking back now, we know that some of Brian's business deals weren't very wise-- but he was paving the way and made the mistakes because he was the first. But he was some sort of glue of the Beatles. Brian was such a beautiful man. We still miss you Eppy.
Happy birthday to our favorite Bond girl!
Best birthday wishes to Barbara Bach on her 70th birthday! Thanks for taking such good care of our Ringo.
One of the saddest days in Beatles history
The top photo was taken earlier in the day. The Beatles were carefree and happy and laughing about something. Then the phone call that changed their lives came through: Brian Epstein had died. You can see the pain on their faces -- the guys and the ladies. They loved Brian and saw him an a mentor and friend. He was the best man at their weddings (except for Paul), and gave all of himself to them. I am not sure if August 27, 1967 is the single saddest day in the history of the Beatles (finding out that Stu had died is up there as well), but it is one of the saddest and the day that began the ultimate break up of the Beatles.
Devastated fans
When the news of Brian Epstein's death broke 50 years ago today, some fans came to his house on Chapel St. in London. They look pretty shocked by the news.

All I need is a pint a day.....
A great set of photos taken TODAY August 24, 2017 of Paul and a film maker from Canada enjoying a pint at a pub in New York. (At least that is what I read about this photo. I don't have the time to research and see if the information is correct). I don't like beer, but even I would have a pint with Paul McCartney!
Last Days
These are some of the last photographs of Brian Epstein that were ever taken. They were taken at the same house where Brian was found dead on the 26th of August. Brian mailed them to Nat Weiss, but I don't know who took the photos. These are very interesting photos, but they make me so sad. Brian had so much left to give to the world and looking at these photos, you can see that he wasn't happy. He was struggling with something. And the Beatles seemed to be so wrapped up in the things that were happening in their own lives that they missed that Brian needed them.
