Never Forgotten

 

Every year on this date, I like to take a moment to remember the people who tragically died on September 11, 2001, in the terrorist attack on the United States.  At that time, I promised to "never forget" the brave men and women who were first responders and those who had just woken up and gone to work that day and never came home.  Posting a little something once a year on this site is my way of ensuring we don't forget. 

The above photo was taken at a Paul concert in 2017.  Paul met the man who designed this logo to remember 9-11.   He had met Paul backstage before the show (see the 9-11 tag for the photo) but was very surprised during the encore when Paul came back with the American flag and Abe appeared with his 9-11 flag.   Then Paul posted both photos on social media.   The guy who designed the symbol was proud but even more proud of the fact that Paul felt it was important to remember what happened.

On June 14, 2008, Paul McCartney gave a free concert in Kyiv, Ukraine.  350,000 people showed up for the concert on the Independence stage.   Paul took the stage and greeted everyone in Ukainanian and then started singing "Drive my Car."    The show was live in Kyiv and 6 other major cities in the country had screens set up for people to watch a  live stream (did we call it that back then?) of the performance plus it was shown live on television!  The entire country was singing Paul's songs at the same time. 

Before the concert, Paul met with fans.    A children's choir sang Beatles songs for him.  Ukraine has a Beatles fan club and some of the club members presented Paul with a kobza, which is a traditional instrument.   He was also given a shirt by the president, Viktor Yushchenko.

I  have been thinking about those Paul fans and the Beatles fan club of Ukraine a lot the past few days.  It is easy to think about people that live in a place that is going through turmoil in a country so far away as just "people."   But when I looked at the photo of Paul giving the thumbs up and the fans behind him are cheering and smiling, I connect to that.   They are my people.   I hate to think of my fellow Beatle fans suffering so much.   

Anyhow--- here is what Paul posted today on his Instagram account.

Just as Paul says, I want all of the fans in Ukraine to know that I'm thinking and praying for them right now.

May 1, 1970 -- I recently researched all about this day in George's life and wrote all about it in my upcoming book about the Beatles North American Fan Club, so I don't want to tell the entire story here.    I will give a few highlights.

The director and assistant of the Beatles U.S. Fan Club were invited to George's hotel room on May 1 so that photos could be taken of George to sell to fan club members and so that Sandi could interview George for her column in Datebook Magazine.   You can see Sandi in the background of one of these photos.  She was pregnant and actually gave birth to her son, Michael about a month later.   Rusty took 70 photos of George.  That means there are a LOT of other photos taken of George in his hotel that we may never see.
