The legacy of George Harrison

Photo taken by Lizzie Bravo

As I am sure anyone that visits this site would know, George Harrison passed away 19 years ago today.  November 29 is a sad day for fans of the Beatles around the world.   George was a special man and his life touch each of us fans in remarkable ways.

George Harrison's biggest legacy is obviously his music.  If you haven't heard the re-done version of "All Things Must Pass" that is on youtube right now ---  stop reading this and go listen to it.   It is amazing.   Even 19 years after his death, George is still blessing us with his music.

However, I think there is more to George's legacy than his music.   These photos I am sharing show one of the other legacies of George and that is one of showing kindness to others.    I always think this was because his mom, Louise instilled in him to treat strangers with kindness that George was so kind.   Of all four of the Beatles, George is the one that opened his home most frequently, chatted with fans, and stopped to sign autographs outside of the studio.    While there are a few stories that show times when George lost his temper, overall -- he went above and beyond to show kindness to others.   As fans we feel like we know the Beatles, but in reality, were are just strangers to them.   George could have simply not answered his door, walked by the girls standing outside of EMI, and not say a word.    But what did he do?   He wrote a song for them!      If everyone in the world was just a little bit more like George -- I think we all would live in a happier place.

Thank you George -- we miss you.

In NYC before life changed

November 26, 1980

These photos have always been difficult ones for me.    Ringo and Barbara look great together.  They are newly in love and in New York City, staying at the Plaza.    It was a happy time for them.   As the story goes,  they met up with John and Yoko this day.    It had been a very busy day for John and Yoko, and yet they still managed to have a meal with John's old friend.    This is when Ringo introduced Barbara for the first (and last) time to John.    Supposedly they were to just have a meal together and go their separate ways, but the two friends were enjoying each other's company so much, that they spent a long time chatting.

It makes me so sad to think that these photos are the last day that Ringo got to see John before he was murdered.   If the conversation was like any other that friends have, they most likely parted saying something along the lines of "we need to do this again sometime,"  or "next time you are in town, come by the Dakota and I can show you how I make bread."    I don't know the exact wording obviously -- but you know -- they probably left each other with open plans to see each other the next time Ringo came to New York.    Ringo and Barb had plans for a December holiday in the Bahamas.   Of course, John's death cut those plans short.

So I guess the bottom line of all of this is that you just never know when the last time will be that you spend with someone.    I am sure Ringo did not think after his meal with John, "that's the last time I will ever see him..."    But I also bet that Ringo was glad to have met up with him and spent that extra time chatting.    So the next time you get the opportunity to see a good friend -- maybe spend a few extra minutes with that person because (to quote Ringo) tomorrow never knows.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Ringo posted this photo to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving.    He often has said that broccoli is one of his favorite foods.

I also want to wish all of the Beatles fans everywhere a very Happy Thanksgiving.   I know that not all of you celebrate Thanksgiving, but it does not matter because we all have so much we can be thankful for.

I am thankful for The Beatles' music,  I'm thankful for John, Paul, George and Ringo.   I am thankful for all of the friends I have made from around the globe because of The Beatles.   I am thankful that this site has made a few people happy along the way.

Peace and Love!

John does his fatherly duties of carving the Thanksgiving turkey -- we don't want any cold turkey on Thanksgiving.   (bad John Lennon joke, but it made me chuckle).

Sad days for Paul's fans

Out of respect for Paul, Linda, and the fans, there are many, many stories from November 1970 that I have chosen not to share.   They all make everyone there looks terrible.    It was a difficult time to be a Paul McCartney fan and it was even more difficult to be Paul or Linda McCartney.    Someday I want these stories to be released because they are all part of the big story of Paul's life.   However -- right now does not seem like the right time.

John Lennon did NOT crash a wedding!

Time to squash a story that has been spreading around the internet for the past few years.   The story goes like this:

The story behind this photo is very interesting. John was doing one of his daily wanderings around New York when he came across a Wedding Reception in progress. John, being John, invited himself in and no one complained. He enjoyed the reception buffet and even joined the band playing for the wedding and performed a number of songs at their request. The bride and groom even had him join them for a wedding photo.

That is a nice story.   Just picture it -- John Lennon crashing a wedding and playing with the wedding band!   Wow!   Too bad it is just that -- a story.   There is absolutely NO TRUTH to this story!   Please do not believe this made-up story.

The truth is still pretty cool, but John didn't eat a buffet or play with a band.

This photo was taken in Philadelphia in May 1975 while John was in Philly for the  Helping Hands marathon.  This was written by one of the girls that worked for WFIL at the time.

Jay Cook, WFIL-AM Program Director brought us all into the recording studio to answer the phones for the telethon. We posed for pics with John Lennon & the following nite was Marple-Newtown's Jr. Prom. Sue Cook, Jay's daughter, is far right. Those were the days. Mrs. Cook had to tell us to stop following him as he was headed to the bathroom!

So there you have it --   there was no wedding.   There WAS a prom.  The program director of WFIL was at the prom and that is why John posed for the photo.   Yes -- I do think it is strange that the girls at the prom have bouquets instead of corsages, but it was the 1970s.  I don't get it.
