The Break up

On July 20, 1968, Jane Asher told Simon Dee's on during a televised interview that her relationship with Paul McCartney was over.     On the 21st the press found Paul at his Dad's house in Whirrl and Paul confirmed that what Jane said was true.

I have always felt a little sad for Jane.  Paul moved onto Linda pretty quickly after the break up with Jane.   But it had to have been painful to not only end your engagement but for it to be worldwide news and EVERYONE knew about it.

  1. There is this popular misconception that Linda replaced Jane. It was Jane who left Paul but he dilly dallied with Francie Swartz and Maggie McGivern before taking up with Linda several weeks later. Despite knowing all three before the break Paul didn't really seem loathe to give Jane up for any of them, quite strange

  2. Like the 'P' cufflink... I guess Jane's reason for going on BBC to break the news was so that she jumped the gun on the media when the news leaked. She could tell the world then leave (and hide) and hopefully the scrum would be over by the time she resurfaced.

    2. Jane was not prepared to answer such a question and simply answered honestly. While she made light remarks of them being friends, Jane has never spoken to Paul since. In fact, Jane has tried very hard to erase Paul and the Beatles from her life, never mentioning them or agreeing to interviews. I respect her for that. She wants nothing to do with him , which seems to hurt him to this day according to his song lyrics.

  3. sometimes first serious relations just don't make it- perhaps ilfestyle choices changed too much in the McCartney/Asher relation for a permanent bond

    1. The timing was probably wrong for them and they were very young. Along with the other women, Jane didn't know how long the Beatles fame was going to last - the Beatles themselves didn't even know. It's easy to make comparisons in retrospect, but the 'second' wives led much more normal lives after the Beatles finished. There are always two sides to a story. Paul probably says what suits him, but understandably Jane doesn't want to discuss it

  4. Im pretty sure that Paul did have Linda in the back of his mind since meeting her. He was probably thinking of a way to be together with her but she lived in America. In the meantime, well, the other girls were...available and there! (MarkZapp)

    1. Maybe. According to an interview Jane gave, she and Paul were still seeing each other for quite a while after they broke up. She still loved him but he obviously wasn't making her happy and I guess the trust had gone. He was pretty cut up about it, perhaps giving rise to his quote "I'm in love but it's impossible". I think he had to make a choice in order to move on

    2. plain & simple, he was a stinker toward Jane but that was many years ago with life going on and they have happy marriages now with other people

    3. I disagree, as Alastair Taylor makes it clear that Jane ended their relationship "then and there" after catching him in the act with FS. She also rejected Paul's pleads of forgiveness and rejected his calls and rejected his mail that were sent back unopened. Jane was not prepared to be asked about Paul on the Dee show and answered honestly. She did say they still loved each other, would get back when they were 70, etc. but it was to avoid scandal and denying Paul of his own narrative. Jane walked away from Paul's money and fame, which shows none of it mattered to her. I also learned that his marriage to Linda was not so wonderful after all and that Linda spoke "quite negative" about Jane to her friends after years of marriage with Paul. Good, glad to know that Paul still pinned for Jane and Linda was miserable. She should not have slept with another woman's fiance, then have the nerve to talk negative about her. A lot of what Paul feels for Jane is in his song lyrics up to 2018. It is tragic

  6. Agree 100% Lisa2020!!!!!! Also, Paul & Jane did talk after she left him - she called Paul to let him know about her father’s death, Linda answered and was less than cordial to Jane... not surprised 🙄 - Paul did speak to Jane and was furious with Linda for her meanness towards Jane!!
