October 16, 1980 -
This is the day where John must have said, "If you wanna get a photo with me, today is the day" because there are a lot of photos of people standing next to John this day at the Hit Factory. A few "new" ones have been hitting the auctions lately. I am happy to add them to the group!
Who was that bearded man?
ReplyDeleteIn the top pic is Jimmy Iovine, who engineered some of John's previous solo stuff, and who would go on to become a big shot
ReplyDeleteThank you! That is who I thought it was, but since I wasn't sure, I didn't want to say that.
DeleteIovine produced a Springsteen song earlier that year. Later in the Fall John said he had heard good things about him, so it's quite possible Iovine was one of those people who discussed him with John this day. By the way, Iovine was producing the great LP Making Movies by Dire Straits in NYC at the time of this pic...Ok, I know I know, back to the Beatles chatter :-)
DeleteWhy do you date these pics Oct. 16th? I think it's the day when "Starting Over" was released - October 24th.

DeleteThis was not the day that it was released to purchase but the first time it was heard on the radio. From what I can tell, that date was October 16, 1980. Does someone else have a different date? You all know I get dates wrong frequently.
DeleteI'm still searching for anyone who recorded the single debut on the radio. Would have loved to hear what John and Yoko were listening.
DeleteSomeone out there HAD to have recorded it, right? I have tapes of radio recordings people made from the night John was murdered. So surely someone recorded the first time (Just Like) Starting Over was on the radio and still has it.
DeleteGreat compilation! One of my favoriteJohn eras [ sigh ]. He does look like he is enjoying posing with all these people.
ReplyDeleteNo, in the top pic is Jack Douglas, not Jimmy Iovine.
ReplyDeleteBut who is on the third picture?
