Lizzie -- Across the Universe -- Rest in Peace

It is with much sadness and tears in my eyes that I want to let all of you that haven't already heard, that one of the biggest supporters of this site from day 1 and Beatles fan, Lizzie Bravo has passed away.

Because of Meet the Beatles...For Real, I became friends with Lizzie.   Before I had this site, she was just a name that I knew as one of the girls that were chosen to sing in the background of "Across the Universe."    Almost right away in 2009 Lizzie contacted me and started correcting me on facts and photos.  She'd tell me the names of fans in the photos and a little information about them.   She would leave comments and tell other fans to visit this site.    I really believe that Lizzie Bravo is the reason why so many people have come to this place on the Internet and I could never thank her enough.

Lizzie and I had a lot in common -  we both love John Lennon the most.  We are both very sensitive.  We both had similar outlooks on life.  We both wrote a book and were trying to self-promote it.   We would chat on the phone from time to time.   I would have never thought I would have been friends with someone that actually recorded with the Beatles.  Someone that lived in Brazil.

I know that everyone that visits this site knows Lizzie too.   Her death is a huge loss to the entire Beatles community.   I am sure that most of you here have your own story of her answering your question, telling you about when she recorded Across the Universe, or some other amazing tale.

We were so blessed to have Lizzie in our community of Beatles friends.  I heard that she passed away during a procedure on her heart, but I am not sure if that is true or a rumor.

I ask that everyone listens to Across the Universe today and spread peace to those around you in Lizzie's memory.

We will always love you Lizzie!

  3. Oh my goodness, I am so sad to read about this. I first read about Lizzie in Nicholas Schaffner's The Beatles Forever. I was so thrilled later on to have a brief correspondence with her. Lizzie was a class act who was so wonderfully modest in lieu of her contributions to Beatles history. One of my favorite stories was when she went to a Macca presser (in the 2000's?), and the man himself remembered/recognized her and chatted with her.

God bless you, Lizzie, and may you rest in peace.

  5. I'm so sorry to hear Lizzie died. Her experiences and living memory were irreplaceable, and she was good enough to share them. And what a brilliant name she had. Who wouldn't want that name on their record label? Lizzie Bravo!

  11. Extremely sad news. I feel so privileged to have been able to correspond with her and it's all thanks to her relationship with you Sara. She was kind enough to sign a copy of her book for me and she also took the time to answer a few of my questions by email. She was the kind of fan we all wish we could be. Rock on Lizzie!

How many people can say "The Beatles invited me to sing in one of their songs"?

  15. Really upsetting to hear this sad news. Met her a couple of times in recent years at the Abbey Road open days. She was very friendly and open with everyone. I truly hope she didn't suffer in anyway and she rests in eternal peace. Bless you, Lizzie xx

  22. I've been out of the country this past week and just came back yesterday. This is shocking news. Like so many here I was in contact with Lizzie and it was a great honour to know her in such a tiny way. She had a difficult time over the last few years with her family and I'm sure they are all in terrible pain now about her. She was the living embodiment of everything this band stood for - peace, love, understanding and making the world a better place through music. Our friend, Lizzie Bravo.

  24. Oh Sara, it's Michael, I just found out moments ago, I came right over, I'm crying my eyes out, I'm broken-hearted, she was so great and so cool, and so kind and helpful, and she gave us so much, I can't think of another place I want to be right now than this blog. I always had wanted to talk to her again, email her, interview her......I love Brazilian music and am always thinking "I've got to ask Lizzie about this"....and I never did because I didn't want to bother her. Oh my god, I just can't believe it. I just saw the new trailer for "Get Back" and all I can think of is how much she would have loved it. Oh my god, this hurts.
I see someone just commented that Gayleen passed in June. I'm going to play their beautiful version of "Across The Universe" right now; it was the first song on the first bootleg I ever heard. It was a compilation 8-track a friend of the family had made for us, and I remember being very small but being mesmerized that there was a different version of this song. The gentle, innocent voices of Gayleen and Lizzie fascinated me and I was never sure if they were kids like me. It turned out they were Beatle fans like me. In my brief correspondence with Lizzie, I learned much (although not enough) about her years singing back-up with people like Milton Nasciemento. As far as I could tell, she knew and possibly sang with all of the great Brazilian musicians of the "Tropicalia" movement: Caetono Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Os Mutantes, etc. But what she was really excited about was the present: her child had grown up to be a musician and was playing and having some success.
Seeing Lizzie comment here on the blog......it would give me chills. I know exactly how you feel, Sara. Never in a million years would I have ever thought I would be able to have a back-and-forth with someone who had hung...and sung with the Beatles.
This amazing, amazing blog has preserved so many of her memories and insights. Thank you, Sara. And thank you, Lizzie. I hate to say goodbye. I can't believe it.
PS: To her friend(s) who comment anonymously....the ones who knew her going way back to then......my condolences and also my appreciation, respect and gratitude for all you post on this blog as well.

You got me dizzy, Miss Lizzie. Rest in peace, our beautiful, forever sister.
