  1. Hi all! My screen name is pharmaross and I am a contributor to the daily blog of Miami Herald nationally syndicated humor columnist, best selling author, and Pulitzer Prize winner Dave Barry. I recently posted some background information on Dave's blog about this picture of Paul McCartney and Wings. Here it is:

"Here's another of my brushes with greatness stories...

In 1976, I was a senior in high school living in Allen Park, MI, a Detroit suburb. I used to hike in a woods near my house but had to run across both the westbound and eastbound lanes of I-94 to reach the woods.

A local Detroit iconic landmark is the 80-foot tall Uniroyal tire alongside I-94. It was formerly a Ferris Wheel at the New York World's Fair, and moved to Allen Park near Uniroyal's headquarters for advertising purposes.

I was waiting to run across the interstate on the shoulder, when a Ford Marquis comes swerving at me from the left lane and abruptly stops by the nearby Uniroyal tire. Some people jump out to take some pictures in front of the iconic tire.

The bearded driver hands me his camera and asks me to take some pictures of them. The guy said, "Let's get a picture with Paul."

They go over to the car and out comes another dude in jeans. They line up and I snap a few pics of them in front of the giant tire. They thanked me and took off.

Fast forward 20 years. I'm reading stories online about an anniversary of the Uniroyal tire being moved to my hometown of Allen Park.

I came across a picture online that looked familiar to me. It was the picture I took 20 years earlier of the shaggy group in front of the tire. It turns out that it was Paul McCartney and his then wife Linda coming into Detroit to play a concert with Wings. I never recognized him at the time, and wished I had to score an autograph."
