  2. Remember this song from the 1993 tour?

"I saw a monkey that was learning to choke
A guy beside him gave him cigarettes to smoke
And every time that monkey started to cough
The bastard laughed his head off
Do you know what I mean"

This is the same man who wrote the lyrics to Eleanor Rigby and For No One!

  3. Paul wrote that song protesting against the cruelty of animal testing. He was in no mood to be "writing pretty". It was very personal to him. (MarkZapp)

    1. When Paul writes "message songs" it comes across poorly. See, also, "Freedom":

      This is my right
      A right given by God
      To live a free life
      To live in freedom
      Talkin' about freedom
      I'm talkin' about freedom
I will fight for the right
      To live in freedom
      Any one
      Tries to take it away
      You'll have to answer
      'Cause this is my right
      I'm talkin' about freedom
      I'm talkin' about freedom
I will fight for the right
      To live in freedom
      Yeah oh
      I'm' talkin' about freedom
      I'm talking about freedom
I will fight for the right
      To live in freedom
      Everybody talkin' about freedom
      We're talkin' about freedom
We will fight for the right
      To live in freedom
      Oh

  5. The lyrics are bad - they almost unintentionally mock animal cruelty, which is sad. Paul's words of protest are better written in letters, not songs.

  6. I agree the lyrics are bad. And Paul's long time advocacy for animal welfare and rights is one of the reasons I love him. But he has never been able to express it in song. John wrote message songs so much better. I do love Martha, My Love though. Nothing bad about a man writing a song about how much he loves his dog :).
