Wings over America Begins!

40 years ago today, Wings started the unforgettable "Wings over America" tour.    Check out these awesome photos of Paul's kids (and Rose) during that first night.

  1. I was there that night at the Tarrant County Convention Center in Fort Worth -- May 3, 1976 -- witnessing Paul's first post-Beatles concert in the United States. It was the first time since Candlestick Park almost 10 years earlier that he'd stepped onto an American stage. My wife and I were high up in the rafters, but what a night it was! Naturally, I still have our two ticket stubs as well as the concert program, which I got signed later that same night by Denny Laine, Jimmy McCulloch and Joe English at the old LeBaron Hotel in Dallas where they stayed. Paul and Linda were renting a house. The show in Fort Worth -- the start of the Wings Over America tour -- had originally been slated for April 9th, but McCulloch had broken his finger in Paris and they postponed the U.S. tour as a result. Rather than issuing new tickets, the promoters told us to use our original tickets with the April 9th date on them. No tickets with a May 3rd date exist. Hard to believe it's been 40 years!

    1. I was talking to someone else that was at this concert over the weekend and he shared with me about the ticket having the April date. I sure wish I could have seen Wings over America, but since my mom was pregnant with me at the time, it would have been really difficult for me to have seen the show. Thanks for sharing your memories, Mark!

    2. Hi Sara:
Your mom was pregnant with you?? Now I feel REALLY old! I was 24 at that concert; I'm 64 now. If I have to be ancient to have the memories I have, then so be it. That was the first time I ever saw a Beatle in concert. (Alas, I was only 12 when the Beatles played Dallas in Sept. 1964, so I wasn't allowed to go unsupervised -- and missed my only chance to see the Beatles live!) But seeing Paul that night in '76 was a real treat because he was just 33 at the time and only 6 years out of the Beatles. He still looked like the '60s Paul, just with longer hair. Very exciting show, with some of the set list devoted to songs off the latest Wings LP, "Wings At The Speed of Sound".
