Simply George

I have to confess something.   I have been "sitting" on this photo for several months now.   I bought it off ebay.   It is beautiful, isn't it?    And I enjoyed having it all to myself.   I know that as soon as I hit that "publish" button on this blog, it is going to spread like wildfire.   It will be on facebook, tumblr and blogs around the world.   It will be on forums in Russia and Japan and who knows where else.   But I have always said that Beatles photos are meant to be shared with the world, and I do believe that.

I do not know who took this photo.   I wish I knew so I could give the correct person credit.

I hope that before you right click and save this photo, that you take a moment to enjoy it and say a little thank you to the dear fan who traveled to London and waited with a camera with color film to capture this snapshot of George Harrison.   I know that I appreciate whoever this fan was.

  1. You're right: it will be 'borrowed' quite a few times. I'll be sure to name check your blog when I do! J x

  2. It's true, Sara. That is the reason why I don't share most of my 100+ photos. If I did, there would be no point in making a book, since everyone would have already seen all my photos a million times. And I am totally aware that once the book is out people will scan them and place them all over, and - as I have heard people do - print them and sell them on ebay... Anyway, this photo is fantastic. I'll send it to the British girls and see if they know who took it.

  3. I have been recently scrutinizing all George and Paul beard pics from between 1969 and 71 trying to discern from which period each pic is from.....and giving myself a headache in the process! I'm sure I'm not the first to do this!

Anyways, I would place this as "All Things Must Pass" era, as opposed to Abbey Road era (or Bangla Desh) era. But if someone disagrees with me (or knows better!), I'm all ears!!

    Fantastic pic, as usual, Saracadabra!!!

    1. You need to get with one of the friends of the blog, Ken Wood. He has a whole time line on Beatles hair and beard lengths. I thought it might be from recording of "ATMP" but I am not a George expert.

    2. Thanks Sara! I only did a bit of research and for this period only on Paul. Unfortunatly my finds and musings are all over the net and probably gone by now, but I always enjoy this subject!

    3. Ok, here's why I am deducing it is from ATMP, and not Abbey Road. The beard is longer than Abbey Road, and so's the hair. He seems to be wearing a denim jacket in many of the pics from this era (including when he went to NYC in October). The fact that another blog visitor asked "is that John's car" makes it even more probable, since they were both recording at Abbey Road during the autumn! (i didn't catch that that was John's car!).

However, looking at it more closely, I don't feel in a position to do anything other than guess that that's EMI....I was just assuming.

In autumn of 71, he seems to still have the long beard, but trimmed his hair.....hence, the ATMP guess.

Mister Ken Wood, great to meet you! I am a fan (of yours), sir! I would love to trade notes about Macca's fuzzy head.....is there an email I can write to you? Maybe I can send you a few examples and specimens to see if you agree about this, that or the other thing!

Thank you Sara for the tip!

Oh, and uh.....I don't know....I think you ARE a George expert! We're ALL George experts around here! :D

    4. Too much honor really! I started with the search of the grow dates of the Pepper moustaches, got into a bit of John and Paul around the final year(s) of the Beatles and moved back to the beginning to find out about the making of a moptop for Ringo - here:

  4. Is that John's car in the background?

  5. I have to agree with Mike as the ATMP period because it seems to me his hair was quite that long (beautiful hair he had - wow!) and since he has pulled back in a ponytail it looks to be that length

Thank you for posting this ever-so-beautiful picture of George

  6. I'm relatively new to the "fan blog" scene, and I enjoy reading the stories you post, especially about George. This is a very nice fan picture. My thoughts are: you have done this picture, and the fan who waited patiently to take it, an honor by posting it. You have recaptured this moment in time and released it for others to enjoy, therefore saving it from obscurity. I know people can be really funny in the world of pictures, stories, and photo sharing, which is difficult sometimes for me to understand.

If and when I have pictures that no one has seen, and copy and post them online, I will watch them spread like wildfire with pride, knowing that without me, they would sit on a shelf, in a book, or buried away somewhere, where as now they are out for everyone to see and enjoy.

Thank you for all you do! And I hope the fan who took this turns up. :-) Best wishes, from another Sara

    1. I am not sure how many other blogs out there are fan based, but it has been an interesting trip. I started this blog with the idea that there were so many fan taken photos out there that have never surfaced and they need to be shared. I still hold to that truth. I had no idea how strange people get with their photos and stories. I would be so happy to share my things with the world, but not everyone feels that way. I respect their choices, even though I do not always understand them completely.

    1. Whoah! Thank you John Mears for clearing that up!

Just goes to show you how much I know!

Post-production work on "Bangla Desh"? I think "It Don't Come Easy" and "Back Off Boogaloo" were done elsewhere.

      Thanks again, John!
