Peter A's Awards

I do not have very much information about this, but it appears to have been from 1965.   I just have a loose article that is ripped up.  I tried my best to salvage it because I do not recall ever seeing these photos before.

Peter A's Awards
Here are some of the lucky winners of Peter's poll
By Doug Perry

First and foremost this week we have -- as promised -- the results of our pop poll for the Peter Aldersley Awards.

If I said that we had received hundred and hundred of voting slips I'd be telling a lie, 'cos actually we had thousands.  Yes, we reckon that about five thousand of you FAB readers sat down to fill in  your forms.   Right then, now on to the lucky winners:

Well, Scott Walker certainly did very well.  He came out top on three of the eight questions, being the boy you'd most like to be marooned with on a desert island -- the boy you'd most like to marry -- and your proudest escort.  In each of these three sections Beatle Paul came a close second, in fact, for the proudest escort only one vote separated them!  Brian Jones, Herman and George Harrison took third places respectively, in these sections.

You voted Paul McCartney the most famous handsome man around (Scott came in second in that one), and for the person you would most like to write a song dedicated to you we received an equal lot of votes for Lennon/McCartney.  Donovan came out third.

That famous Herman grin carried off the most votes for the person you'd like to have around to cheer you up, with witty John Lennon running second and Paul third.

You voted Mick Jagger the nicest ugly on the scene, with Ringo and Sonny taking the minor places here.

Finally in the group section you chose to be housekeeper to the fab four Beatles, followed by the Walkers and the Stones.

Well, there you are.  Thanks again for all your votes, we spent hours going through them, and we hope some of your own favourites did well.

Oh, incidentally, Peter Aldersely has been very busy presenting all the winners with their awards, so they'll have an extra present in their Christmas stocking this year.

caption:  As usual the Beatles were right up there at the top of your personal pops.   Paul Beatle yo voted the handsomest man going (you can say that again).  You wanted Paul and John to write you a song.  And you practically unanimously settle for being housekeeper to the Beatles.  Respective prizes:  an ashtray--John nicked that.  A quill pen and paper -- John nicked that, and a mirror -- we suspect Jane Asher landed up with that.

    1. Thanks! All I had was the loose clipping in bad shape and couldn't find a name of a magazine anywhere.

  2. Wow, I had to look up Scott Walker. What an interesting career he's had... and I've never even heard of him!

    1. I had to look him up as well. I guess he just wasn't popular in the United States at the time. But I figured he must have been something special to have beat Paul in some of those categories!

  3. Hey, these pics are evidently from the famous Sherriff Road photosession with Robert Whitaker

  4. There were two photographers there that day - Bill Francis and Robert Whitaker - and many of the photos that Bill took have been subsequently miscredited to Whitaker.

    1. May I ask where does this information about photographer Bill Francis come from?

  5. From the issues of Fabulous magazine themselves - Bill is clearly credited for the photos he took including this article!!

    1. Was he one of the regular photographers for Fabulous magazine?

  6. Yes, Sara, he was. He took all those colour shots - I think you have posted some - of the Beatles opening champagne, presents etc, with streamers and balloons that were all part of a Fabulous magazine photo session in October 1964. In fact one of Bill' shots made the cover of the US album Beatles VI. He often shared the photo shoot time with Robert (Bob) Whitaker - that's why his pics often get misattributed.

    1. Thank you for the answer. Can you provide a scan or a link to a photo from any of these two photosessions with “photo by” or © or something of the kind, attributing pics to Bill Francis?

  7. I don't have a scanner but if you look on eBay, issues of Fabulous come up from time to time with Bill's pics either on the cover or inside. Good luck!
