In remembrance

Before I head off to bed, I want to post something in remembrance of my all time favorite "other" Beatle person who tragically died 37 years ago today.  Mal Evans was a wonderful part of the Beatles story and I hope as the years go by, he is not forgotten.   So many of the lovely Beatle people left us too early, and sadly Mal was one in that list.   However, his kind gestures towards the fans will always be talked about and remembered.

We love you Mal!

  3. Evans was killed by police on 5 January 1976, at his home in Los Angeles.

    Not Today 4 January.

    2. Yipes, Sara, some of these people!

Hey, absolutely love these pictures, especially the one of him with John on Top of The Pops!

Recently, at the amazing beatlechat blog, two unbelievable interviews with Mal, just a month before his death, were posted. An hour each. They will give you CHILLS. Mal is even better than he seems, you listen to these, you fall in love with him, you know exactly why they kept him around.

But the best part of listening to those interviews? Mal would have LOVED this blog, Sara. He LOVED Beatle fans, and he loved nothing more than to talk about them.

So if you, or anyone else, hasn't heard these interviews yet, I highly recommend them. The first is an interview, the second is a call-in radio show where Beatlefans and Mal really commiserate!

      Here's the post:

Enjoy, our brother Mal....you listen to these interviews - or look at these beautiful pictures - and his death seems to be second only to John and George's passings in terms of Beatle tragedies.

    3. Thank your kind words, they actually made me start to cry. Mal honestly reminds me of my Grandpa who passed away in 1994. They look similar and had a big teddy bear heart. I think that is why I have always loved Mal so much. So the thought of Mal reading my blog and liking it was sort of an emotional thing. Plus I am a big cry-baby. Haha!

I have those two interviews on CDr's that someone from BZ made me years ago. What did I ever do with them? I think it is worth listening to this evening.

  6. Lovely tribute to a lovely man. If the Beatles were a religion (and they kind of are ;-), then Mal would be a patron saint. He will forever be remembered, don't worry. Anytime a teenager who's just discovering The Fabs asks, "Who's that counting in A Day in the Life?" then Mal will live on!

    1. Or if anyone asks about the anvil on Maxwell's Silver Hammer. Good point!

  7. Saw Mal at what used to be called "Beatlefest" back in 1975, and I still think he was the best guest ever! His joy and enthusiasm was so obvious, and he was very approachable. I'll never forget my shock at hearing how he died. I also wonder just what happened to the book he was writing...what a book that would have been! Thanks for always being there for "the boys" and the fans, Mal.

    1. There are a few photos on this blog of Mal at that Beatlefest in 1975. May Pang was there with him, which I find interesting. I would have LOVED to have heard him speak. Actually Mal's son, Gary has contacted me a few months ago that he is looking for photos or audio from the Beatlefest that he Dad was at. I emailed Mark Lapidos and asked him, but got no response.

It is such a shame that Mal's book is gone. It is also a mystery. His book was almost finished, right? Surely there was more than one copy of what was done. It is like someone is trying to keep the book from us or something....I am not big on conspiracy theories or anything, but it just seems weird.

  8. Anyone know anything about the 5th photo down where Mal and Paul are leaning over railings in a park?

  9. Yes, this was taken in Tokyo on the Beatles' Japanese tour June-Jul 1966. Mal and Paul managed to sneak out very early one morning to do a bit of sightseeing. I think the pic was taken by Robert Whitaker. Incidentally, John and Neil managed to get out and about briefly as well.

  10. Good question: what DID happen to that manuscript? The Sunday Times (UK) did a story on Mal and his diaries a few years ago and had a few scans from his diaries. They painted a picture of quite a sad man.

Mal was still ultimately a gofer. If there was ever a 5th Beatle, it had to be George Martin, not Mal. But if there was anyone who saw and experienced practically everything the fab four experienced, then it was Mal Evans. His perspective on Anthology, for example, would have been incredible. Such a loss. (Instead we had way too much Neil Aspinal, no Pete Best, and no Yoko Ono).

In fact were any books written by an Inner Circle member, while all 4 Beatles were still alive? Did Cynthia's 1978 memoir make much of a splash at the time? John's dying changed everything.

  11. Those Mal Evans tapes were a delight, he sounds uncannily like the 5th Beatle! Interesting he says he worked for "them" up until "end of last year" (1974 then).

Four busy ex-Beatles still around, and it all being in recent memory for Mal. Interesting indeed. And what about the book? Finished or unfinished, any publisher worth his salt knows that would sell like a new Beatle single.

Nice man. At least he was spared the horror of John's murder, and George's attempted murder.

the layout on your blog. Is this a paid theme or
did you modify it yourself? Anyway keep up the excellent quality writing, it is
rare to see a nice blog like this one nowadays.
