Jackets

Can someone please inform me about this photo?   Is this a fan-taken photo?   When was it?  Where was it?   I can't even pinpoint a year.   Obviously it was before 1971.

  1. Late 1966. The Pepper sessions had started.

  2. Not sure if it is Pepper sessions - at the start of the sessions he had no beard at all, then he grew a mustache plus beard on the chin as well. The chin-beard then was gone but by then he grew a style where the mustache joined the sideburns.
I think during all this he let his hear grow, which he cropped fairly short (for a Beatles after India) He didn`t let it grow Moptop-style but simple long with a parting in the middle appearing during the process.
So while we here see a mustache, non of the other hairy features are really present as far as I can tell. His hair looks big, like a out-of-control moptop.
His (first) mustache in 66 was grown shortly before or in India - but again his hair was different then - still it is my best guess, especially as Pattie is with him.
Either that or some Post-Pepper timeframe.

  3. Seem to remember it was taken at George's parents house; I think there's another one from that day with his family in it.

  4. The photo was taken in early 1967 (circa Feb. or March) at the Liverpool home of Peter and Pauline Harrison (George's brother and sister-in-law). Pauline took the photos and gave copies to a fan. The photos were later made available for sale thru a couple of the Beatles' 70's fanzines (With A Little Help From My Friends and The Harrison Alliance). There were five photos in the set that I know of (three color and two b&w). In another of the color photos George is holding what looks like a card. Perhaps he was receiving gifts? - for maybe his birthday (Feb. 25) or wedding anniversary (Jan. 21)? George's parents were also there - looks like a family get-together.

  5. The trouble with the early '67 dating is George had full moustache and beard and/or goatee (see Ken Wood's detailed description above) and his hair was longer - as evidenced by SFF/Penny Lane promos and photos taken at EMI Studios during Pepper sessions those months. This looks to me just post the India trip when his hair was growing back and he first grew facial hair - just in to the Pepper sessions. But good to know the location and source, Lynn. Does anyone out there have more definitive info as to the occasion?

  6. Lynn, thanks for the detailed info - I`m still not sure though. This what George looked like on February 7:

And this is what he looked like on March 30:

He sure does not feature the chin beard anymore on our photo here - but I also don`t see his sideburns connecting with his mustache either, although this seems to be less clear.
Would love to see more photos from this event!

  7. Looked again at photos from the periode - obviously the chin beard was shaved off between 10 and 14 February. The sideburns/mustache connection is subsequently seen sometimes better and sometimes not so clear on the photos after this date, so I would say there is a possiblity that this one was indeed taken after February 10 but during the Pepper sessions.

  8. Cheers, Ken - such a forensic level of facial fungus research I am indebted! :-)

  9. Well it must have been chilly. Coats indoors, they won't feel the benefit...

  10. I found the original photo list from the fanzines that sold the photo/s of George and Pattie from Pauline Harrison's family photo album. Unfortunately no exact date is stated for the photos. The photo list does say Pauline gave the photos to PAT KINZER (now Pat Kinzer Mancuso) of the Official George Harrison Fan Club - which George endorsed (until a fallout). You already have several posts about Pat Kinzer here on this blog with lots of info.
