If you were a member of the Official Beatles Fan club, then you were most likely a very happy Beatle fan! The fan club sent out newsletters to keep you up to date with the Beatle news (which in a time without the Internet must have been wonderful to read!) and many other little "perks." Every Christmas members would get a special Christmas record and throughout the year members would receive posters, postcards and most interesting to me, photo packets. Especially towards the end of the Beatles fan club run, they would send out a mailing that had photos of the individual Beatles. Here are three such photos of John. The bottom two show him working on the making of the Abbey Road Album. The top photo is from my own collection. I bought that John photo many, many years ago. I hope to get more of them in the future!
I wish there were still fan clubs like that. E-mail newsletters are not that exciting.

ReplyDeleteThe UK sent out ,if you bought them,the Superpix series which had full address,logos etc,as opposed to above.
ReplyDeleteThe John in hat was in the latter of the 2 1969 series.Beatle Monthly readers could buy it via the magazine,as seen that year or also seen,but not for sale,in the 1982 reprint.
There were other colour pictures,not "Card" as Superpix were,which were paper which were sent out in the UK,Geoerge with acoustic and Ringo on drums(latter as seen recently at W..Blog/Both from AMTP sessions).
Maybe I was short changed but no "Photo wallets " were sent out in the last 2 years when I was a member,posters,xmas single 69 and 1970 LP,history booklet and the above colour pictures and of course newsletters(usually sinle page of type).

i belonged to the uk fan club. i had never seen those photos above as being from the fan club, maybe i was back in brazil when they came out (i left in late october 1969). i bought some of the superpix. i got the newsletters and the flexi discs (which were later stolen). i still have my fan club card. the newsletters were ok too. i went to the fan club in liverpool in 1968, i believe i spoke to freda kelly. it's in my diaries but i would have to go back and look to make sure.
ReplyDeletei just remembered i got at least one large poster too. that i - of course! - cut up and shared with friends, which is what i did with everything beatle at the time. we all did here in rio. crazy girls!
ReplyDeleteWelcome back, Sara. Top photo was taken in July 1969 on the flight from Scotland back to London after the car accident involving John, Yoko, Kyoko and Julian. There's another pic of John on the plane reading a Sunday tabloid newspaper about Brian Jones' recent death. I've always wanted to know who the photographer was. Does anyone have any idea?
