Here are some photos from Lizzie's files. Obviously she did not take these photographs because she is in them. Lizzie knitted some baby items for Yoko (who sadly lost the baby) and John's new child and they are smiling because of the gifts.
It is also worth mentioning that today marks 42 years since Lizzie and Gayleen sang with the guys on "Across the Universe." What a wonderful day to remember!
I just saw this today - it has an interview with Lizzie about Across the Universe:

Looks like Yoko is kind of wearing a sari. Pretty cool!
ReplyDeleteYeah. It was the same kind of outfit that Cynthia and Patti wore in India in 1968. I guess no one told Yoko how to wear a sari properly because that looks awful. (Believe me, I looked up many images of women wearing a sari on Google and I can tell.)
DeleteMaybe Lizzie the gifts that you gave to them was used many years later when Sean was born..

Brilliant and dated what more could you ask for!!
ReplyDeletePresume you have put them up at D by D too?

hi everyone! i just saw that article, two friends sent it to me. it was nice, but they called us apple scruffs and the scruffs didn't come about until 1969 so i wrote them a comment. i hope sean ended up wearing the knitted items, they were made with much love. have a great day!
ReplyDeleteHad wondered about the tag as its now applied to 1967 pictures,I know Apple existed then but only odd references like Pepper sleeve.
ReplyDeleteBut Id wondered if George had invented it on ATMP,but no.
When did the term first catch on/appear,in print presumably?

Over the years the term "Apple Scruffs" seems to be used to mean any of the fans who hung around the Beatles recording studios / homes regardless of the year. I think this is because so little true information about the Scruffs is out there. So people (including myself at one time) just lumped all of the fans who were there as "Apple Scruffs." That is why I have been trying my best to research the truth about this small group of fans and post my findings here. I believe the term first was used in late 1969???
ReplyDeleteyou're right, sara. late 1969. i can't remember the exact month. maybe some of the anonymous scruffs who write here could give the precise answer... but the name certainly didn't apply to all fans.
ReplyDeleteYes the name Apple Scruffs came about in late 1969 and included some Regulars from earlier years. I was one of the Regulars too. Apple Scruff Anonymous.
ReplyDeleteSome sources may vary. Most sources I read say the name Apple Scruff came from George Harrison in the late 1960s, which he then wrote a song about in 1970, while another one said the name was most likely by a fan who had been around the longest named Margo Stevens who was the “leader” of the Apple Scruffs. Then there was another source on, funny enough, this site in a post called “Happy Anniversary to the Apple Scruffs!!!!” that commemorates the 50th anniversary of the name Apple Scruffs when they officially were named around Late October-Early November which was the closest to Lizzie’s answer above. So either George, Margo, or someone else in that group or in the Regulars (though most unlikely George) may have coined that term around that time period, though it is highly debatable on who came up with the name first and when it was officially used in that time period.
DeletePlease go to the Apple Scruffs web page to answer any of your Apple Scruff questions.
DeleteI just saw something in my diaries. It mentioned a "Cavendish Union" and "EMI Regulars". I certainly belonged to both! And you, my dear Apple Scruff Anonymous, whoever you are, certainly must have too!
ReplyDeleteWhat were the baby items she knitted?
ReplyDeletelizzie was a gift to all fans
ReplyDeleteJust so there won’t be any confusion, this happened on the 9th of September, not on the 12th. Lizzie just happened to write the date three days later on the second photo, that’s why she wrote the 12th.
ReplyDeleteJust so nobody is confused, this happened on the 9th of September, not on the 12th. Lizzie just happened to write the date down three days later on the second photo, hence why she wrote the 12th.
ReplyDeleteThat’s Anthony Fawcett, John and Yoko’s assistant, behind them in the second photo.
ReplyDeleteWhen Fawcett wrote the book One Day At A Time, he included interesting detail on the Apple meeting when John resigned from the band. Thanks for pointing out Fawcett, it's the 1st time I've seen him in a pic dated so close to that meeting.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know what happened to the gift that Lizzie gave them?
ReplyDeleteWho's that person with the camera behind Lizzie in the first photo?
ReplyDeleteIs this Yoko’s second pregnancy with John, just to be sure?
ReplyDeleteSeptember 9th was also the day John, Paul, and George held their meeting at Apple Corps headquarters at Savile Row on plans for their future. Anthony Fawcett brought a tape recorder to the meeting so Ringo could hear it since he was absent that day because he was at the hospital for intestinal complaints.
ReplyDeleteYou can read the story here: https://www.beatlesbible.com/1969/09/09/john-lennon-paul-mccartney-george-harrison-discuss-future/
We already had pics from the day of the final Beatles meeting on 9/20/69.
DeleteAnd now, thanks to Lizzie, it appears we now have pics from the day of the next to last ever meeting (albeit only John, who appears to be leaving that meeting). Fantastic. Lizzie, we love you and miss you dearly.
Based on the second photo below, I can’t really make out what’s in that wrapping that John is holding. By the way, what were the gifts anyway?
ReplyDeleteTo answer of all your questions on what the baby things were anon: There white booties, mittens, and a hat with white satin ribbons.
