Paul's Magic
By John Blake

After this concert, a lot of people are going to stop caring whether the Beatles get back together or not. For even a reformed Beatles would have trouble producing the spellbinding music that McCartney and Wings sustained for two and a half hours last night.
At last, the band has fulfilled its early promise. In the early days, McCartney seemed so desperate to prove he really could do it alone that the music suffered. But now he has proved everything he needs to and can just bounce about and sing favorites from his vast repertoire of beautiful music.
Though he says little to his adoring audience, McCartney is a master showman, and the hours of painstaking rehearsal show. But though all eyes are obviously on Paul, Wings has become very much a band, rather than just the backing group they were when they played in London two years ago.
It was a magic evening, and certainly the best rock show I have seen in London this year. I only feel sorry for John, George, and Ringo in having to try to compete with something like this.
