My Day to Remember

The following account was written by 14-year-old Elaine Knauter,
who, in the company of three girls, attended the recent appearance of the
Beatles at the Cow Palace. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Knauter
of Fairfield.
One day to remember for many years to come,
for me, a day set apart from all the others, was the day I went to see the
Beatles in San Francisco. I was lucky enough to win two free tickets to the
Beatles concert at the Cow Palace through a contest held by Gallenkamps in
Fairfield.
Vivian Thurber, Alice and Laura Thompson, and I attended the afternoon
performance. There are between 14,000 and 16,000 people present. Among them
were many grown-ups who were right in there pushing with the teenagers to see
the Beatles.
The Beatles were on stage for 45
minutes and were wonderful. They sang several songs, but who knows what they
were for all the screaming that was going on. Anyway, just seeing them in person was pretty
wonderful. People were throwing jelly beans, popcorn, cups, stuffed animals and
such on the stage, as well as many trying to get on the stage themselves. Not
too many seats were used for the purpose of sitting. Mostly they were used to
stand on or crawl over to get just a little bit closer. At the time, I remember
wishing I were quite a bit taller so I could get a better view.
I thought the days before the
concert would never pass. When the day finally did come, it was all over too
soon. I wanted all the excitement and thrill of really seeing the Beatles in
person to last and last. Now I do have that wonderful day to remember, though,
and I am already looking forward to seeing them again next year if they come
back again.
