Harrison could be THE Event

Harrison Could be THE Event

Music fans dressed in blue jeans, permanent press coordinates, and formals flocked to the Civic Center Thursday night for the George Harrison concert, a gig that may have been THE music event of the year in Tulsa.

Harrison, the former Beatles lead guitarist, who, since his Fab Four days, has become a star rock performer in his own right, lived up to the crowd's expectations. About 8,770 persons jammed into the auditorium; many sat behind the stage or in front of 20-foot-high speakers with an obstructed view.

However, the eyes doesn't have to see what the ear can appreciate, apparently, because the whole room was frequently brought to its feet for thundering ovations. Tickets for the concert topped at $9.50, but many paid. Many persons in the crowd paid much more. Ticket scalpers formed outside the center hours before the show's 9pm start asking from $10 - $20 for a ticket. One concertgoer reported being offered upwards of $100 for his two tickets. The show was officially sold out through mail orders more than a month ago.

Once inside the building, the event turned into something of a homecoming event, as the festive mood audience yelled greetings back and forth across the auditorium floor. As Harrison walked onto the darkened stage, camera flashbulbs popped like firecrackers on the Fourth of July. A whining siren sound came from one of Billy Preston's keyboards, and Harrison and his band riffed into a musical explosion.

Sharing the bill with Harrison was Indian musicman Ravi Shankar, and while his style of music is a little different from the backwood harmonies of the Ozarks, the crowd was very appreciative of the Eastern sounds. Most of their energy was saved, however, for Harrison and his keyboard man deluxe: Billy Preston. Throughout most of the show, a security force comprised of University of Tulsa, John Mabee residents kept the aisles clear of stage rushers, but when Preston soloed toward the end of the show, urging the crowd to "have a party," the walkways filled with hand clapping, foot stomping enthusiasts.

As Harrison ended the show, joined by Tulsa's own Leon Russell, the entire crowd was on its feet and whooping up a storm. "I can't believe how good the show is," One smiling person shouted during the encore. "It's so much fun, "another added.  The crowd came expecting a musical happening, and they weren't disappointed.

    5. Hello, I'm a big fan of George Harrison and his son Dhani, but since I have many story ideas and drawings from them but no one knows because I'm very strange, I have Asperger's syndrome and they ignore me on all my accounts, and well, I don't want to bother others. My pity, but since this is a Beatles club, I like it a lot and sometimes I cry because I have never had friends here or in real life.

    6. I have an idea for a story about Dhani Harrison when he was a little newborn baby. I really like those and no one likes them or finds them strange like a person with Asperger's syndrome, but I have more ideas for stories and drawings by George. Harrison and his son Dhani and his family

    7. What exactly is Asperger's syndrome? Not everybody here is obsessed with George Harrison! Stories and drawings about George and his son Dhani, should be posted specificaly on the page dedicated to him and his family.

    8. But mine are invented, the stories and drawings and I don't know how to explain Asperger's syndrome,.

    9. I know kids that have Asperger's. If you want a definition, go use Google, instead of drawing attention to yourself in the most crASS way possible. It will take you about, oh, 30 seconds. Also, I guess one definition of the word Jerk would be someone who petulantly asks (demands) someone to explain the disorder they suffer from...November 26 at 511, you have friends here and are welcome here, and should just ignore the jerks that occasionally pop up on this board.

    10. Yes -- all are welcome here and most people are kind. We do get a rude person that appears now and then.

    11. So you don't like my idea of making an invented story of Dhani Harrison when he was a little newborn baby???, I don't do this with bad intentions😢😢😢♥️♥️♥️🙏🙏🙏

    12. Nov 28 at 6.06 am. Your comment was very rude. There's nothing wrong in asking about a condition, that someone has never heard of. And then calling them jerks! Don't bother to respond, your comment is and will remain nothing but senseless and rude. 🙄😁

    13. I'm sorry, hey, you're hurting my feelings and I've already cried because of you and one thing I'm very strange about is my ideas for drawings and stories, even if it's about George Harrison, his son Dhani and his family, I'm asking if anyone can help me. do it or are you interested and I have Asperger syndrome, is there anything wrong with that???😢😢😢

    14. Nov 29 at 2.36 am Do whatever you like dear. I only meant that on George's page, you sure going to find more friends/fans there, and your stories/drawings will be more appreciated.

    16. I have to agree that your stories and drawings would be better on a fan page for George Harrison. This isn't a place where you can share photos because it just isn't designed that way. Look for a George Harrison page on Facebook. There are a lot of them and I am sure they would love to read your stories. Or you can look into a group that publishes Beatles fan fiction. Best of luck to you!

    17. Ok, thank you very much but I tried it on George Harrison's Facebook pages but they ignore me, that's what you're saying, right???😢😢😢

    18. Just post your pictures and stories on the Harrison page without talking about yourself. If the material is of interest to the visitors, they will come back for more. If the moderator writes your contributions aren't appreciated, start your own page. No one can be expected to take interest in a project when the first thing one hears about it is the creator has personal challenges that may seem "strange."

  2. Nov 29 at 938, thank you for the morning laugh. Been awhile since Ive read such portentous tough guy talk. Now back to your cave.

  3. It was an innocent question, made with no bad intentions, which after all wasn't addressed to you. You thought it was demanding and somehow felt offended. Your choice of words in your comment were obnoxious. Rude people belong in caves. Keep on laughing, laughter will do you a world of good. You certainly need it.
