An important day in Beatles history

January 19, 1994 -  Paul coming to induct John into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 was a moment when history was made.   Not only did Paul give a very emotional speech in the form of a letter to John, but of course, this was the night when Paul and Yoko hugged and mended their relationship, and Yoko handed over the tapes for "Free as a Bird,"  "Real Love," "Now and Then," and "Grow Old with Me."    At least that is the cannon for the story -- I think this was in the works before the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but still, at the time, I remember seeing the photos of Paul and Yoko hugging and couldn't believe that day had come!

  1. The Beatles should have been inducted at very first after the first wave, Little Richard, Elvis etc. That Paul, as the other half of one of the greatest songwriting collaborations in modern history, was not inducted at the same time as John was a travesty. Jann Wenner was hugely biased towards John and everything rode on the tragedy of John's death and his politics. Why did Paul comply? He knew there would be an outcry if he didn't. Nothing about this silly pretentious 'honour' was based on merit for anybody.

    1. The Beatles WERE inducted at their earliest chance of entering the Hall: 25 years after their first record was released so what are you complaining about?

    2. Agree, 100%.
When I would meet someone in a situation such as a co-worker or at a party or other social gathering and the B4 came up, the attitude about John's sainthood would also become evident. So many nasty lectures and bad attitudes about how Paul wasn't worthy or deserving of the "honor" -- very hurtful and blatantly tied up in the influence Wenner had at the time.
Can't say I'm all that sorry about his downfall. A setback of his own making.

    3. 9.17pm The Beatles should have been inducted in the very first year alongside Elvis and other early artists. The Beatles resurrected the careers of Little Richard, Chuck Berry and others who had fallen by the wayside because of race attitudes. There would be no rock history as we know it today without the Beatles spearheading the movement. Like I said, merit, not sentiment or pointless chronological order. And it is called the hall of FAME.

    4. That's NOT how the Hall works. That's how YOU want it to work.

  2. On November '93 Paul mentions about working on the Anthology series, and making music with the surviving members of the band (background music). The Rock and Roll HOF was a few months later. So it's possible that Yoko did hand Paul in January '94 - BUT I thought this was when Paul and Linda stayed overnight at the Dakota? Or was it that Yoko stayed at Paul's? Anyways, here is a video link of Paul's comments about the TV series: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=804dSCknsUU&t=191s

  4. Didnt take long after RS started publishing that Jann Wenner became intoxicated by his own power and influence. And then years later, we watch as the print magazine industry dies a slow, painful death. I enjoyed watching every single year pass by as the pages of his magazine dwindled down into oblivion. Good riddance.
