|The hallways of my empty school|
I don't like asking for donations, but here I go. As many of you know, I am an elementary school teacher. During a typical year, I am a reading intervention teacher for 3rd-5th grade kids (9-11 year olds). This school year has been anything but typical. My job is currently on "pause" and so I have been the remote teacher for 1st graders (6-7 year olds). My class just went from 15 students to 28 overnight, but that is a different story.
My school has been closed (well except for a hybrid time we had for about 1 month). I go everyday to an empty building. I haven't been in person with students since March 16.
I'm trying keep some things fun. One of the things I have done for the past 3 years is hold a girls' book club called the "Literacy Lunch Ladies." This is a book club open to 4th - 5th grade girls. Typically we meet during their lunch/recess once a week. The idea is to read a book and talk about friendship and the girl drama all 9-11 year old girls seem to have.
Even though I am not teaching my usual classes, I have been still holding the LLL on Zoom once a week. Only 4 girls have stuck with it all school year, but they are dedicated and LOVE it. We have been reading through the Babysitters Club Books. They can really relate to the characters and we have been reading through the books quickly.
I raised the funds for the first 4 books in the series, thinking that would take us through the school year. I was wrong. I need 3 more books. Part of the group is that you get to keep the books so that you can re-read them. I have totally ran out of funds to get the books we need and so I started a Donor's Choose.
If you can donate just a few dollars so that we can get more books to read, I cannot tell you how much I appreciate it.
I know, I know -- this has nothing to do with The Beatles whatsoever. Maybe I am taking advantage of the fact that people visit this site. If you are offended, please just scroll on by to the awesome George photo below this. If you are interested in throwing in a little bit of money here is the link.
