I've been to Abbey Road a few times but never had the courage to venture past the gates. It looks like back in the 60's the fans were free to wander the parking lot.
The first time I went, in 1990, you could do that. I went inside and asked if they did tours (they didn't; I knew that, but just wanted to go in). Nowadays they tend to keep the gates shut and security is more visible. It's a circus outside most days.
