10 Things you don't know about Apple Scruffs

If you have read this blog for awhile, you will know that I tend to focus on things in the Beatles fandom and that the topic of the Apple Scruffs has been near and dear to my heart.   Over the years I have read so many things about the Apple Scruffs that I knew were untrue.   I  have heard so many people claim to have been an Apple Scruff or people who claim that they knew someone was a member of the group.  And yet I knew that the number of people that could call themselves "Apple Scruffs" was very small.   I have read that they were groupies that slept with the Beatles.   And on and on.    Yet the girls have remained private and the rumors have gotten larger and larger.   So I really wanted to set the record straight.   With so much wrong information out there, it wasn't an easy task, but I attempted to write an article to debunk some of those myths.

I want to say what I expressed on my facebook page for this blog.  And that is that I hope not to have offended or upset any of the true Apple Scruff members.   I really put a lot of time and thought into this article.   The things I wrote in the article are true as much as I know.   If nothing else I hope that people come away with the realization that 1.  Not everyone who hung around the Beatles in the 1960's was an Apple Scruff and 2.  The Apple Scruffs did not have sex with the Beatles.

On a personal note, this is the first thing I have ever written that wasn't for this blog.   So I want to thank Allison at Rebeat magazine for giving me the opportunity to write this article and publishing it for the online magazine.   When I was young, I had a dream of being a journalist and an author.    That dream fizzled out as I got older and I decided that I wanted to be a teacher.  However, there was always a small part of me that wanted to be a writer.

  1. Very interesting article and I guess it was not easy to get all this information and present it in a way that does justice to everybody, because I got the impression that the Apple Scruffs are not only secretive and protective about their history but possibly not completly united regarding what this story actually consists of.
One paragraph struck me as being possibly misdated:
"The Apple Scruff members didn’t cry on April 12, 1970; in face, there’s video footage of them singing a chorus of “Hey Jude” on the steps of 3 Savile Row and joking around with Ringo Starr."
The only footage I know (and have not seen all of he footage either) is this interview with fans (Apple Scruffs? One girl is adressed as Margo):
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NfAmycnJPEY
Then there is footage as reported on Bamiyan`s site, obviously showing Derek Taylor inside Apple and Ringo Starr with fans outside. Cannot tell is anybody is singing Hey Jude but could it be that this is he footage you refer to?
All this footage is dated April 10, so does this mean there is further footage from the 12th or was that a typo? (or is the footage wrongly dated?).
To me the girls are trying to play it cool and in fact noone is crying but the first girl is about to and another one later says she is almost about to.
Interesting also to hear what they have to say - I did not understand anything but there seems to be quite some denial of reality, like not believing they really split (or Paul really leaving), as well as fingerpointing at Linda as being the culprit of taking Paul away, much in the same way as Yoko was made responsible for John`s quitting in the subsequent years.

  2. PS here it is: a long interview with Derek (though not the one in his wicker chair), some scenes outside, including the girls singing Hey Jude and Ringo leaving, having some fan interaction:

  3. Ken--that is the clip that I was thinking of. I thought it was all on the day the Beatles broke up. Maybe it wasn't the exact day of the announcement, but a few days later. ?????

  4. Same here - also think that all of this happens April 10 but was confuse when you wrote April 12.

    1. It must have been a mistake in the story. My original copy of it says "April 10"

  6. Dear Sara, considering the lack of information available on the Scruffs, you did a wonderful job. There are a couple of things that are not 100% accurate, but all in all you definitely helped get rid of at least these two things that people always get wrong: not all people who hung out outside Apple, EMI, etc. were Apple Scruffs and the Scruffs were not groupies. Well done!
