Greek Treat

I wanted the last post of the year to be a special one, and it is indeed.   I was actually trying to find some information about the stickers from early 1964 that said "The Beatles are coming."   While looking for that, I found these instead:  rare, gorgeous, fan-taken photos of John and Ringo in Greece during their time there in July 1967.   Now and then I fall upon some Beatles photos that are so great that I want to share them with everyone and forget the consequences.   But I have learned from my past mistakes and so I left a message on the blog that I found these treasures and asked if I could share them.    Sure that these would go into the "do not share on blog" files, I was happy when I received a "yes" response!!

These were posted on a cooking blog, so if you are someone who is the "Cook of the House" or are "Cooking in the Kitchen of Love" then go and check out Coco's blog, Coco Cooks for recipes for your family to enjoy.

These photos were taken by Coco's husband, Bob, when he was 18 years old.  I am not sure why he was in Greece that summer, but he and his friends were waiting for Stavros Melissinos, the famous poet/sandal maker to get his shop back open after a lunch break.    So there they were standing outside of this shop, when they spotted some hippies coming towards them.   Bob was not familiar with the Beatles current look ( Pepper had only been out a couple months at this point), and didn't recognize them right away, but then suddenly realized who the hippies were!

Once Bob realized exactly who was coming his direction, he stood up and pounded on the door of the shop yelling "the Beatles are here!"

Bob took some photos of John and Cynthia as well as Ringo and also got an autograph.

You can see Coco's blog entry about this right here.

Is that red-head in the last photo with Ringo Jane Asher?

  1. Interesting that johns necklace in 67 is very similar to the one he wore circa 72/73. Same one?

    1. I noticed that as well. I wonder if he bought it in Greece and wore it again in the 72/73.

  2. Is that Paula Boyd and Magic Alex in the first photo.

    1. I thought it was Neil Aspinall in the corner of the first photo. I am not sure who the blond girl is.

  3. Fantastic, Sara, wow........going to that blog right now!

(ah, wait, a ps:a slight typo to point out! you write 1969 instead of 1967 in the beginning of the post, just in case you want to change it!)

  4. as evidenced by Ric's comment above, these photos are so clearly from 7/67 that most of your readers probably didn't even notice the typo, but for the sake of accuracy, I did want to point out that you accidentally dated these to 7/69 in the entry.

happy new year to you, Sara.

  5. These would have been taken on July 26, 1967 - the same day the Beatles party boarded the Mardas family yacht. You can see from the home movies in the Beatles Anthology DVDs that Cyn is dressed the same boarding the yacht and Jane Asher was wearing white as shown in the photo with Ringo - ditto for Alex Mardas in the red stripe (first photo). I agree that is Paula Boyd in the yellow t-shirt walking beside John in the first photo. Thanks for posting these Sara!!!

    1. Aren't these great? I noticed that they were wearing the same clothes as the Anthology video, but I didn't have a date for it. Thanks for helping me out, Lynn.

  6. Great photos: is that 'Bob' reflected in the Ringo one?

  7. So where did John get that 'talisman' necklace?? No one seems to know where it came from? Whether it was purchased by him, given to him as a gift or what? Personally, I think Yoko gave it to him, usually 'talisman' necklaces are suppose to 'draw' what you want to you (i.e. talisman for money, for health, for love, etc). Being that Yoko was a stalker, I'm going with she gave him the necklace with some voodoo magic spell on it, cos it's funny how he never took it off...he didn't really wear much jewelry at all, but that necklace stayed on him for a very long time...and then poof, he gave it Alex who in turn sold it at auction.
