Yes I will, I'll get you in the end....

Here is one of the most "famous" fans to have gotten on stage at a Beatles concert.   And now we have her name!  This is Mary Smith who was a 17 year old girl from Connecticut when she got on the stage and grabbed George during the 1964 concert at Forest Hills.

I have to wonder how she got on stage.  What did she think she was going to do up there.  Did George say anything to her when she was up there?   Did she get in trouble afterwards?   What is she doing today? Also does anyone know if the interview with her is available?

Finding Mary Smith is difficult.  She has a very common name, plus it is the same name as John's aunt Mimi.   And as with most ladies, "Smith" would be her maiden name and who knows what name she goes by today.   However, I have hope!   If you know Mary or if you are Mary, please contact me because I am sure that everyone at this blog would love to know your story of when you had your moment on stage with George Harrison in 1964.

  1. I was at this concert and I remember lucky Mary really well. She was the first one out of the gate. Other kids tried to follow her but I guess about 20 or more security cops were quick to squash the stampede. That's how she got through. The whole thing really couldn't have taken more than a few minutes, it was quickly taken care of. I do remember the cops having all they could do to get Mary off poor George but they did. Looking back the cops were really good, No one got hurt and the concert went on without further incident and no one got hurt. It was great and I'll never forget it. These pictures are fantastic. Just as I remember it.

  3. I know her. She's my wife. She told me all about this when we met more than 20 years ago. She remembers losing her shoes and being interviewed - she gave the name Mary Smith because her parents told her she couldn't go, so of course she went anyway. It was years later that I began finding pictures of her hug on the Web. A few years ago she did speak to the photographer who got the great shot of her approaching George. But, she's reluctant to talk about it and prefers to keep the memory to herself. But it's without question her, just as she described to me years ago. And she's still very pretty!

    1. Please send her our love and thank you for your reply. She will always be known to us fans as "Mary that hugged George." What a wonderful memory she has for herself. I wish her the best.

    2. I think she's shy about it because she feels a bit embarrassed about it and because George was totally flipped out!

Personally I'm proud of her and I enjoy finding these pictures. I think the info in "Some Fun Tonight" came from a telephone conversation she had with the photographer some years ago.

  4. I can relay a few other things: she was just under 15 and had a huge crush on George. She went with a girlfriend and they planned on trying to get to George but the girlfriend got caught before she got to the stage. They both dressed up to try and look more adult. It all happened in a blur, but she remembers that John saw her and when he realized she was coming to George he smiled and stepped back a bit to let her pass. And, she says George was completely freaked out and was screaming!
