anonymous might be right... it's really hard for me to figure out (very short-sighted). at a first glance it could have been the black metal gates at cav from the 60's. but it could also be the railings and he's going up the stairs... only when we find a better copy of that photo we'll be able to tell.
That looks like the same coat John wore during the "All You Need Is Love" taping in '67. Yes?
