I just posted some video footage of when John Lennon was at the Philadelphia radio station, WFIL in 1975 and now here are some photographs of the occassion. I have previously posted pohtos from the Helping Hands Marathon that were taken of John with fans outside of the radio studio. Here are some taken on the inside.
I wish I could have been there. Was anyone who reads this blog there the day John co-hosted the radio station?
I wasn't there but I listened to it on the radio. I recorded a little of it on tape. What an event, those that were there & heard it on radio will never forget it. I heard the whole weekend was recorded on tape & sold at auction for $50,000.00 or more a few years ago. I wish I could get more of this event on tape.If anyone has any of this on tape please email me.

Richard, I have the bootleg that is pretty common that has some of this radio program. Years ago I had a cassette tape that someone I was pen pals with had recorded off the radio of the program. I cannot find any of my Beatles cassettes from the 1980's-early 1990's to save my life. But they have to be around somewhere! If I ever do find it, I will let you know. This person also sent me radio programs from the Philly area from when John was murdered, which were really touching and sad.
ReplyDeleteI was there - on Saturday afternoon. I had the radio on at home when they said John was going to go outside and meet people in the parking lot. My sister and I jumped in the car and were there in minutes; it was a relatively small crowd. While we were waiting, a chocolate brown Rolls Royce drove in with comedian Flip Wilson in it - he rolled down his window and waved hello.
ReplyDeleteJohn came around and shook hands with people, and handed out autographed 45s to everyone. I had a paycheck stub in my pocket, so I handed it to John, and he signed that. It was back in the days of 126 instamatic cameras, and I have my own special photos which aren't great for strangers to see, but they recall the memories that are indelibly in my head. One of the highlights of all time!
Thanks for sharing your memory, Jeanne! That really is something special and big that happened in your life! Do you still have your autograph pay stub? Did you get one of the 45's he was handing out? I think the Philly radio thing was awesome. John seemed so at peace with himself.
ReplyDeletePlease, are you interested in sharing your memories of the WFIL weekend for a story in Thrust™ Magazine?

When I heard he was throwing on long records like Led Zeppelin's Kashmir, and coming outside to collect money, I jumped in my 1964 Ford Galaxie 500 and headed down Rt. 1/City Line Ave to the studio. After a short wait outside with about 50 other fans, here comes John! I held out a dollar and after I put it in the bowl, he shook my hand!
ReplyDeleteYES , I was there , hung with him for 3 days & have pics.. I was on the phones and working passing out signed records, 45's of Mind Games. I sometimes helped with promotions for Jerry Hutton Promotions Manager and Jay & Carolyn Cook , Jay was program Director at the time. I spent alot of time at WPVI studios with Ed Hurst and was on the Steel Pier Dance show 4 years
