Welcome to Miami

So these aren't really "new" photos to any Beatle fan. But I didn't know the information about the fans in the photo until I read about it in Dezo Hoffman's book. I find this interesting. Here is what he said,

Even in the sea the Beatles couldn't escape from their admirers, but sometimes fans could be fun. Here they are frolicking with some girls form Miami Beach High School who were working as part-time models at a car show. Ringo with fans Barbara Turchin and Carol Olesky; he later dated Barbara, taking her to a drive-in movie. When the Beatles left Miami, as a parting gift Ringo gave her a ring.

So let me get this straight. Ringo, the 23 year old, went on a date to a drive in movie with a girl that he met on the beach who is a student at the local high school and models on the side? I guess that is something I don't really want to think about too much. Anyhow....I wonder if Barbara still has that ring? Maybe Ringo just has a thing for girls named Barbara

  2. You might want to check out the interview that Ringo did with radio shock jock Howard Stern. If Ringo is to be believed and these are the girls, he gave both Barbara (and Carol!) more than a ring!

  3. Seems like he cheated on Maureen way before the Chris O'Dell thing...makes me sad.

  4. she did a newspaper tell all thing years later. Possibly around the 80s. A friend of mine had it in one of her Beatles scrapbooks. Then when Ringo did the Stern interview it totally tied the whole thing together.

If I remember rightly, the girl in question is the one on the left of the picture. but don't hold me to that.

...also, note that the girl in the right is wearing the same swimming costume that Maureen wore on the holiday to Tobago with Ringo, John and Cynthia.

  5. I've wondered what Ringo said during that interview.

Does anyone have a link or a transcript or anything?

  8. That is some observation by premierludwig about the swimsuit. How did Ringo sort that one out?

  9. AWW.
As for cheating...hrm. It just smacks to me of a publicity thing and not an ongoing affair.

  10. Barbara Turchin is the girl on the left, and Carol Olesky is the girl on the right. They were interviewed for Life Magazine's February 1984 issue, commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Beatles' first U.S. tour. Barbara said Ringo went to her house for dinner, arriving in a moving van so no one would see him. He played the piano for Barbara's brothers, and her grandmother kept calling him "Hugo" and kept tugging at his hair to see if it was real. When he left, he gave Barbara the ring and she wore it around her neck for a time.

In the same magazine interview, Carol said she kept her distance after the photo shoot because her mother didn't want her hanging out with the Beatles and she already had a boyfriend. However, Carol was on the Oprah Winfrey Show sometime in the late '90s and early 2000s, when Oprah did a show called "Baby Boomer Photographs," where members of that generation came on to show favorite, memorable pictures that have been published and become iconic. Carol made no mention of her mother not wanting her to go out with them or already having a boyfriend. She said she liked George and wanted to go out with him, but it was impossible because of security problems.
