Paul McCartney and the Wings pop group had a quiet reception when they arrived in Sydney from Melbourne yesterday afternoon. The former member of The Beatles, his wife Linda, and other members of Wings were greeted on the tarmac by about 15 press, radio, and television representatives and a few airport staff.
Paul McCartney, sporting a healthy growth of stubble and wearing a black leather jacket, seemed relieved at the lack of public attention. He said he was glad to be back in Sydney, 10 years after the arrival of the Beatles drew crowds to the airport. "This time we'll see a lot more of Australia," he said.
As for the Beatles, had their struggle to the top of the pop world been worthwhile? He paused a moment, grinned, and replied, "No."
Wings will appear at sold-out concerts at the Horden Pavilion tonight and tomorrow.
