The birth of the Traveling Wilburys

I found this photo and information the Roy Orbison Facebook page.

After a little detective work, I found that Roy played in Anaheim at the Celebrity Theater on April 9, 1988.

Pictured are: Roy Orbison, George Harrison, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison Jr and some of Roy’s backing band.

Backstage at a Roy concert in Anaheim, California.

After recording the song “Handle With Care” and spending some days together casually, George Harrison wanted to record an album as a band.

Moments before this picture was taken, George Harrison gave the pitch for the band, got down on his knee to ask Roy to join the band. Roy said “yes” immediately.

There was no name for the band yet. By the next time they met, George had record company backing and the name - The Traveling Wilburys!

Temples in Flames Tour

October 17, 1987 -  Bob Dylan along with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers went on a great tour called "Temples in Flames."   The tour ended in London and so there is no surprise that George Harrison (and Jeff Lynne) showed up backstage.

A special guest at Friar Park

This photo and story were shared on Instagram by the legendary skateboarder, Tony Hawk.

"We were doing a demo near London during a Bones Brigade tour in 1990 when a kid asked if we’d like to come to his house for dinner. It was an unusual request, but he had confidence and explained that his dad would be excited to meet us. We quickly learned that his name was Dhani Harrison, and his dad was the legendary George Harrison. We agreed, and headed to his place (castle) after the demo. His mom Olivia was a most gracious host, offering us homemade pizza. She proudly gave us a preview of a charity album she organized to benefit Romanian orphans that featured the Traveling Wilburys, who would be recording at their home studio the following day. We were led into the living room where George and Tom Petty were fixated on the World Cup finals. It was surreal. Dhani showed us his room and some of his guitar techniques he had learned from Bob Dylan, who was scheduled to arrive later that night. Dhani and I have remained in contact to this day, and it has been inspiring to see how him forging his own way as a talented musician while keeping the grace and humility of his legendary father."

Thinking of Tom

The stories of Tom Petty's condition have been sketchy all day today.    Regardless if he is living or not, Tom is in our thoughts and I wanted to have a special post for Tom.

George at the Royal Albert Hall

On April 6, 1992 George Harrison appeared in concert (which was extremely rare!) at the Royal Albert Hall.    The concert was a benefit for the Natural Law Party.  Ringo was there and played the drums.   Rumor has it that Paul was backstage at one point, but there isn't any photo evidence or report of that to be a fact.     Many British Beatle fans were thrilled for the once in a lifetime chance to see George Harrison perform a concert.
